At one point sixty-six people were tearing through Night City simultaneously, and the server took it. Then a few more joined, and it stopped taking it.
That is the takeaway from the second semi-open test of CyberMP, the multiplayer mod that has spent its time quietly building the one feature CD Projekt RED chose to leave out.
The crashing isn’t really the point here. Locating the ceiling is. The team has now mapped where the breaking point sits, and it has promised to patch that up ahead of the next open test. As it stands today, the mod carries 30 to 40 players without any fuss.
The one thing Cyberpunk 2077 never had
There is a lot Cyberpunk 2077 gets credit for. Multiplayer has never been part of that, for the simple reason that none exists.
CD Projekt RED hasn’t budged on this. The studio has stated it stands by the decision to keep its RPG single-player, and it has held that line even as fans continued asking for a way to tackle Night City alongside friends.

The requests make sense. This city was made for it: dense, vertical, detailed to an absurd degree, and packed with things that fail in fascinating ways the moment a second armed person walks in.

A sequel is in development, so that feedback might eventually find a home. But it’s a maybe, and it sits years away.
So the modders did it themselves
CyberMP isn’t new, or at least the work on it isn’t. The mod is unfinished. What it does have is a development cycle carried out in the open, with fans putting every stage through its paces.

The concept is straightforward: take to the streets with friends, run your own server, and bolt on new features, with friendly fire looking like a fairly obvious entry on that list.
Early days, certainly. It is also the most expansive multiplayer experience Cyberpunk 2077 has, and not by a narrow margin.
What the numbers actually tell you
Peaking at 66 players inside an engine that was never designed for any of this counts as genuine progress. The wave of arrivals afterwards tipped it beyond stability, which is precisely the job a semi-open test is meant to do.
Right now, 30 to 40 is the comfortable range. In a city of this scale that’s a server packed with chaos, and it’s plenty to sell the fantasy.
Further tests could follow. When the mod will be finished remains unannounced.
Worth keeping an eye on
Anyone holding out for co-op in Night City should look here. It isn’t coming from a studio roadmap. It’s coming from a test server that collapsed at 67 and picked itself back up.
Follow CyberMP’s progress and you’ll spot the moment it’s ready. After that, you and several dozen strangers can go give Arasaka a genuine incident to deal with.
That neon-drenched metropolis has been short on company for long enough.
