About Pirate Nation
Pirate Nation is an onchain pirate role-playing game by Proof of Play. It launched as a free-to-play RPG in which players formed crews, designed and built ships, explored the "Infinite Isles," harvested island resources through Energy, and fought card-based battles, with game state recorded onchain rather than on private servers. The genesis Founder's Pirates NFT collection exists on Ethereum, while gameplay itself ran on Proof of Play's own Apex and Boss chains. In August 2025 the studio announced it would wind down the original game — now referred to as Pirate Nation Classic — citing a decline from roughly 100,000 daily active players at peak to about 10,000 and the cost of operating both the game and its networks. The Classic version and the Apex and Boss chains have since closed.

How to play Pirate Nation
The game continues as Pirate Nation Arcade, a roguelite adapted from Classic's "Infinite Tides" mode and running on the Abstract chain. Players select one of nine pirate captains, each with its own vessel and base card set — for example Lady Lara's heavily armored Floating Fortress or Captain Hightide's speed-oriented Barbary Coast — then engage sequential waves of enemies using a single ship whose HP persists between battles, gaining one card to the deck from a randomly offered selection after each victory. The cycle is buy credits, attempt runs, accumulate Abstract XP. The first run is free, and spending additional credits raises the score multiplier that impacts leaderboard standing. Weekly leaderboards distribute cash rewards; the inaugural Total Run Leaderboard victor obtained a Founder's Pirate.
Pirate Nation tokenomics & earning
$PIRATE is an ERC-20 token on Ethereum mainnet (contract 0x7613c48e0cd50e42dd9bf0f6c235063145f6f8dc) with a total supply of one billion and a token generation event on 13 June 2024. The stated allocation breaks down to 47% community, 28% team, 13.25% ecosystem, and 11.75% investors and advisors. In Classic, $PIRATE converted into Gems, a non-transferable in-game hard currency, so Gem spending functioned as a token sink. Proof of Play has indicated its current priorities are the token and the Arcade rather than the original RPG.

Pirate Nation began as Proof of Play's effort to operate a complete role-playing game entirely onchain instead of on private servers: crews, vessels, crafting, resource collection and card battles, all resolved as transactions on the studio's own Apex and Boss chains. That version, now called Pirate Nation Classic, has been discontinued. The studio cited a fall from roughly 100,000 daily players at its height to about 10,000, and the cost of maintaining both a game and the networks supporting it.
What remains is Pirate Nation Arcade on Abstract, a smaller roguelite extracted from Classic's Infinite Tides mode. You pick one of nine captains, all commanding a unique vessel and starting deck, then battle successive enemy waves with a single hull whose damage persists through battles, choosing one card from a random set after each win. That persistent hull damage is the sharp design decision — a won engagement can still end your attempt.
The friction surrounds the economy. Entry is free; after that you pay for credits, and higher spending increases the multiplier affecting leaderboard rank, so deeper spending improves your standing directly. Anyone coming for the onchain pirate MMORPG the name still suggests should understand it no longer exists; the Arcade fits players seeking short, competitive deck runs and prepared to pay for the ladder.
