QuarkID: Buenos Aires Pioneers with Blockchain-Based Digital ID System

The Government of Buenos Aires has launched QuarkID. This cutting-edge digital identity system integrates blockchain technology and zero-knowledge cryptography, marking the city as the first major capital to do so.

This innovative project is now accessible through the miBA mobile app, which over 3.6 million residents use. Starting October 1, 2024, all active miBA users will receive their decentralized digital identities (DIDs), setting a new standard for privacy and security in digital interactions.

Securing Identity with Advanced Technology

QuarkID is designed as a digital trust framework that secures user authentication via blockchain. Unlike traditional systems where usernames are commonly used, QuarkID employs cryptographic keys that allow residents to sign in to websites and services using their decentralized identifier data.

This method enhances security and gives users full control over their personal information. The underlying technology of this system is ZKsync, an Ethereum-based Layer 2 blockchain solution, which ensures efficient and secure transactions.

Testing and Adoption in the Local Community

The implementation of QuarkID was first tested during Aleph, a month-long crypto pop-up event in Buenos Aires. Here, hundreds of participants used their digital IDs to carry out transactions with local merchants, access co-working spaces, and engage in various activities. The success of this pilot phase underscored the system’s potential to revolutionize everyday transactions and identity verification processes.
