Marvel’s Wolverine Is Here — and Sony Turned the PS App Yellow for It

Pull up the PS App on your phone. Go on. It’s yellow.

Not the PlayStation blue you’ve had sitting on your home screen for years — yellow, the precise shade any Wolverine fan recognises on sight. Sony Interactive Entertainment swapped it over to mark the arrival of Marvel’s Wolverine, and if the icon still looks the way it always has, your app needs updating.

One catch: it won’t stick around. The swap is only expected to run for a few weeks, so enjoy it while it lasts.

Sony saves this trick for a select few

Which is precisely why a yellow app icon is worth writing about. The PS App treatment goes to a handful of gaming’s biggest launches and nothing else. Grand Theft Auto VI, arriving later this year, looks like a near-certain candidate. Past that, which releases earn it is anyone’s guess.

All the noise comes down to this: Marvel’s Wolverine is a PlayStation exclusive, and it arrives today, 15 September, on PlayStation 5.

Insomniac puts the claws in Logan’s hands

Development duties fell to Insomniac Games, the studio responsible for Marvel’s Spider-Man, and what they’ve made is an action-adventure centred on the Marvel Comics character. The official announcement came all the way back in 2021. It’s been a long wait.

The story puts you in the boots of James “Logan” Howlett, a mutant with no memory of his past, who returns to his old team to look into a string of mutant abductions while trying to work out who he used to be.

It stands on its own within Insomniac’s Marvel franchise. While the game “shares continuity” with the studio’s other entries, you can start here without having played any of them.

We scored it 7/10, and the why is the interesting part

Seven out of 10 was where our review settled, and the problem isn’t anything Wolverine gets wrong. It’s the company he keeps.

“It may be unfair, but it’s impossible to play Marvel’s Wolverine without comparing it to Insomniac’s previous Spider-Man games,” our review reads. “There’s nothing as pleasantly surprising here as in the first Marvel’s Spider-Man game, and while Marvel’s Wolverine still has an emotional edge, the gameplay and storytelling can’t really get out of Peter Parker’s shadow. Too many parts feel like a game I’ve already played before.”

Then comes the line that lands hardest — not because it’s cruel, but because it clearly comes from a fan.

“Marvel’s Wolverine is a fine game. Good, even. However, given Insomniac’s pedigree, I was expecting something a bit closer to greatness, which ultimately made this outing with Logan a bit of a disappointment. I’m cautiously optimistic about Wolverine’s future in Insomniac’s Marvel universe, even if this is an admirable – but flawed – first offering.”

Draw your own conclusions

Treat a seven as a comparison, not a caution. This is a studio being measured against its own finest work and falling slightly short of it — a predicament plenty of developers would happily trade for.

So grab the update, enjoy your app going yellow, and form your own verdict on Logan. The claws come out on PS5 today. That yellow icon has a short shelf life.
