One playthrough. Four regions. Not a cent spent.
That is the promise behind Pokémon Emerald Extended Cut, a finished ROM hack layered over Pokémon Emerald Version that delivers Hoenn, Johto, Kanto and the Sevii Islands inside a single save file. The project is fan-made and non-profit, and it works on Windows, Linux, Android, iOS, Mac, along with consoles and handhelds capable of running Game Boy Advance titles.
Emerald arrived back in 2004 on the Game Boy, and two decades later fans discuss it as though the credits rolled yesterday. They are equally clear-eyed about its gaps. Titles from that generation all share a familiar list of small comforts that modern players expect and simply never receive.
The scale is the whole point
The first release came from user Francis III in December 2025. An update this July wrapped things up, meaning the hack can now be played from opening scene to finale.
“Pokémon Emerald Extended Cut is a ROM hack based on Pokémon Emerald that adds the Johto, Kanto and the Sevii Islands into the game,” the game description reads. “Being a semi-open world hack, it gives you the chance to explore each region in any order you like. Along with that, it also adds 30+ new cities, 70+ new routes and 45+ new dungeons.”
That phrase, semi-open world, carries plenty of weight. The running order belongs to you. No region sits around waiting for its turn.
Old maps, redrawn
A number of the older maps have been rebuilt with a new look, so the trip between two towns is no longer pure muscle memory. In effect, you are discovering these regions from scratch a second time.
Team Rocket also shows its face in Hoenn, sharing territory with Team Aqua and Team Magma.
Fewer trainers blocking the road
Mandatory battles have been trimmed down to keep exploration brisk. The encounters that survive are the ones with weight behind them: Gym Leaders, the Elite Four and notable Trainers.
The intent behind it all fits into a single sentence. Hoenn, Johto, Kanto and the Sevii Islands, together in one game and one playthrough, minus the chore of mentally stitching four separate cartridges together.
489 entries in the Pokédex
Every one of the 386 Pokémon spanning Generation 1 through 3 is included. The revised Pokédex counts 489 Pokémon, a jump from the original 386.
On top of that come entirely new Starter ‘mons, 24 Gym Battles, three Pokémon League Championships, upgraded town maps and the choice to let your Pokémon trail along behind you.
Memorised all of Emerald already? It hardly matters. What you have here is a different game dressed in familiar sprites, and the price tag is zero.
