Bruce Wayne is out of action after Bane snapped his spine. Somebody has to put on the cowl in his place.
To mark Batman Day, Warner Bros. Home Entertainment unveiled the first official trailer for Batman: Knightfall Part 2: Knightquest, the middle chapter of its R-rated animated DC trilogy. Due out later this year, the film continues directly from Batman: Knightfall Part 1: Knightfall, leaving Bruce Wayne paralyzed and Gotham without its protector.
Taking over is Jean-Paul Valley, better known as Azrael, and comic readers will already know he has no interest in following Bruce’s code. The footage spells it out: with Bane having emptied Arkham Asylum, the Bat-Family is spread dangerously thin, a new Batman has to emerge, and Jean-Paul’s approach to the job is nothing like the original’s.
The official synopsis doesn’t soften it: “Batman lies broken at the hands of the villainous mastermind Bane. With Bruce Wayne paralyzed from the waist down and unable to continue as Batman, a new successor must be chosen to defend Gotham City. Jean-Paul Valley, the man also known as Azrael, must take up the mantle of the Batman. But will his more violent methods be enough to stop Bane?”
Familiar voices return, with one unanswered question
Anson Mount is back as Bruce Wayne, Pablo Schreiber voices Jean-Paul, and Michael Mando returns for a second turn as Bane. Rounding out the lineup are Jack Griffo as Tim Drake, a.k.a. Robin, Bruce Boxleitner as Commissioner Gordon and Simon Templeman as Alfred Pennyworth.
There’s also a first glimpse of Dick Grayson, a.k.a. Nightwing, sporting one of his classic comic-book costumes. His voice actor hasn’t been announced. That remains the lone open question for a trilogy that sits within a broader slate of Batman films and TV series DC Studios has in development.
What the subtitle tells us
The name Knightquest wasn’t picked at random; it’s taken directly from the comic-book storyline. That makes it a strong bet that the third installment, slated for release sometime in 2027, will be called KnightsEnd. The trilogy is tracking the source material step by step, and that story ends with Bruce fighting to reclaim what’s his.
The first film justified a sequel on its own merits. As of writing, Batman: Knightfall Part 1: Knightfall holds a 92% rating on Rotten Tomatoes alongside a 94% audience score. Given it launched in late August, a concrete release date for part 2 would ideally arrive sooner rather than later.
Another R-rated Batman story is coming this fall
Separately, DC Studios is bringing the live-action Clayface film to theaters on October 23, set within James Gunn’s DC Universe. Directed by James Watkins, the movie follows Matt Hagen, played by Tom Rhys Harries, as he transforms into the notorious shape-shifting monster who ranks among Bruce’s most dangerous enemies in the canon.
