Arkham Asylum goes up in smoke at Bane’s hands, and the inmates spilling out of it slowly wear Bruce Wayne down to nothing. That’s the premise Warner Bros. has just dropped onto digital storefronts — and audiences needed roughly a day to catch on.

Batman: Knightfall Part 1 arrived as a home release on August 25, 2026. A day later, on August 26, it sat at Number 3 on Apple TV’s VOD charts.

For an animated feature that never saw a theatrical run, that kind of climb is unusually quick — and a signal of just how much readers wanted this specific storyline adapted.

The comic arc that finally got its movie

Published by DC Comics across the 1990s, “Knightfall” has remained one of the most celebrated Batman arcs ever put to page. It shoves Bruce well past his breaking point, and the fallout — disastrous in the moment — lingers in the comics for years to come.

No one had adapted the arc before now, and this film handles only its opening third. Which is to say: it’s Part 1 of a trilogy, and the darkest turns are still to come.

The studio unveiled the project back at New York Comic Con in October 2025, and expectations have been mounting ever since.

An R rating that isn’t just for show

Batman films carrying an R rating make for a very short list. Every other entry on it is animated as well, arriving either as a standalone or under the DC Animated Movie Universe banner.

Here, the rating is what makes fidelity possible. As Bruce hunts down one escaped criminal after another, the film charts his mounting exhaustion — all while Bane’s scheme sits patiently in the background, biding its time.

Batman movies tend to work no matter the format. Christopher Nolan's Dark Knight trilogy grossed $2.46 billion worldwide on a combined budget of $585 million. And 2022’s The Batman launched a whole shared universe off its back, from HBO’s The Penguin miniseries to The Batman Part II.

When it lands on HBO Max is still a question

A streaming date remains unconfirmed by Warner Bros. For now, the film is available to rent or purchase digitally, with the physical release scheduled for September 8, 2026.

If past animated DC titles are any guide, roughly three months from the initial release is a fair estimate for an HBO Max arrival. That would land it around year’s end — or push it to January 2027, should the studio prefer to steer clear of the holiday crush.

Date aside, the digital performance is already telling. Barely a day in, Bane’s demolition work is pulling numbers strong enough to make Part 2 look like an easy call.
