For weeks, Sony has been insisting to anyone within earshot that PS5 is the best place to play GTA 6. Take-Two’s response, intentional or not, was to sign a new publishing deal with Microsoft and Xbox.

The timing is hard to ignore. GTA 6 arrives on November 19, 2026, so the deal lands less than two months before launch. Xbox owners hoping this signals Take-Two leaning heavily toward their platform should temper expectations, though. At its core, this agreement is mostly paperwork.

What the filing says

The agreement is confirmed, having appeared in an official SEC filing from Take-Two. According to that document, the company entered a new “long-term XBOX Publisher License Agreement with an effective date of September 17, 2026. The Agreement grants the company to develop, publish, have manufactured, market, advertise, distribute, and sell Xbox compatible products for all XBOX devices.”

Microsoft retains approval rights over game concepts, final builds and certain marketing materials under the arrangement. Payments are handled through wholesale pricing and/or revenue sharing on Take-Two’s digital products.

This is familiar ground. Take-Two and Microsoft already had a similar agreement in place, and the new one simply renews it. It just so happens that GTA 6 is the largest release Take-Two has on the horizon.

The phrase worth paying attention to

The key detail comes down to three words: “all XBOX devices.”

Where the earlier agreement named specific consoles such as Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S, the updated language ought to extend to future hardware as well. That would cover Project Helix, which rumors suggest will launch in 2027. Bear in mind that the Helix release window remains unconfirmed, and the filing never mentions Helix by name. Connecting the deal to Helix is speculation drawn from the wider wording.

So what changes for GTA 6

Very little. The deal lets Microsoft continue marketing GTA 6 on Xbox all the way to the November 19 launch. Reports say the game is already "breaking records" on Xbox, and the renewal simply keeps Take-Two and Microsoft’s business ties intact as release day approaches.

Some observers have taken the deal as a sign that Xbox could be on the market. That idea runs into a problem: Xbox CEO Asha Sharma has already confirmed that Microsoft is not selling Xbox.

Sony is welcome to keep pushing its “plays best on PS5” message. Meanwhile, Microsoft has quietly signed the unglamorous contract that allows it to sell the same game on every console it builds for years ahead.
