Abstract Blockchain to Shut Down on December 15, 2026, Shifting Focus to Pudgy Penguins

igloo to close abstract blockchain on december 15 2026 shifting focus In Brief:

In Brief:

  • After failing to build a sustainable blockchain ecosystem, Abstract has confirmed it will go offline on December 15, 2026.
  • Any funds still on the network after the deadline will become inaccessible, so users need to move their assets before then.
  • Having lost tens of millions of dollars, Igloo, the parent company behind Abstract, will put its resources into the Pudgy Penguins NFT collection.

Abstract to wind down operations

Abstract, the consumer-oriented Ethereum layer-2 blockchain, is set to shut down on December 15, 2026. The move comes after a year in which the team tried and failed to find product-market fit and a sustainable business model.

Users have until the shutdown date to migrate their assets, and any funds left behind will be inaccessible. The Abstract team says it will help projects move to other chains, and some developers have already announced plans to relocate to Robinhood Chain.

The shutdown marks a step back from Igloo’s ambition to build a blockchain for mainstream entertainment and gaming. Abstract's mainnet went live in January 2025 with the goal of making crypto easier to use through its Portal discovery platform and Global Wallet. The network was held back, though, by a lackluster DeFi ecosystem, low liquidity, and limited institutional engagement.

Abstract processed more than 325 million transactions and saw four million wallets created, yet it never landed on a sustainable revenue model. Businesses building on the platform generated over $40 million. According to Igloo CEO Luca Netz, it was the heavy losses piled up over two years that ultimately led to the shutdown.

Netz said Igloo had looked at launching an Abstract token or an initial coin offering but decided against both, arguing that “a token only works if there is something driving demand to it.” He added that releasing a token without real conviction behind it would have let users down.

Game developers using Abstract, including the teams behind YGG Play and Pudgy Party (official site), now have to move their operations right away. Users can withdraw their assets through Abstract’s Migration Hub or its native bridge. Both are available through official channels, and users are warned to watch out for impersonators.

Migration details are available at the Migration Hub at migrate.abs.xyz and the native bridge at native-bridge.abs.xyz.
