In a significant move against global cybercrime, Binance has partnered with Argentine security forces to dismantle a sophisticated cybercriminal network. This collaboration resulted in the capture of key suspects involved in exploiting Brazilian “Trojan” malware to attack numerous organizations including companies, schools, and law enforcement bodies. The operation saw 64 coordinated raids within Argentina, leading to the arrest of 20 individuals, with international efforts underway to apprehend additional suspects.
The cybercriminals utilized advanced malware to infiltrate systems and illegally transfer funds to their accounts, ultimately laundering over 1.5 billion Argentine pesos (approximately $170,000 USD) through cryptocurrency transactions. These funds were converted into USDT, a type of cryptocurrency, and moved to international wallets, complicating the tracing process. The multi-national nature of this scheme involved activities across several countries including Venezuela, Ecuador, Colombia, and the U.S., highlighting the borderless aspect of such crimes.
Thanks to the detailed intelligence and investigative efforts of both Argentine law enforcement and Binance’s fraud specialists, the operation was able to freeze assets and put a substantial dent in the operations of this criminal syndicate. The raids resulted in the seizure of significant assets and the identification of 70 individuals linked to this network. Notably, among those captured is Francisco Javier Uribe Urdaneta, a key figure in the network, currently pending extradition from North America.
This is not the first instance of Binance stepping forward to assist in curbing illegal activities. The cryptocurrency exchange previously collaborated with Dutch authorities to freeze assets tied to a fraudulent exit scam involving a gambling platform. By leveraging its robust anti-money laundering systems and transaction tracing technologies, Binance has established itself as a critical ally in the global fight against financial crimes related to digital assets.
