The creators of Paper Girls are working together again.

Writer Brian K. Vaughan and artist Cliff Chiang, the duo behind Paper Girls, have a new series coming from Image Comics called Roam. The book was announced at NYCC 2026, and it’s the first time the two have collaborated in more than a decade. Of all the comics news to come out of the convention, this is the announcement you’ll want to pass along to your friends.

The rest of the original crew has signed on as well. Matt Wilson handles colors and Jared Fletcher handles letters, which means Roam brings the same team back to the same publisher more than 10 years later.

Much of the art is already done

Readers who have sat through long waits between issues will like what Vaughan had to say: Chiang already has a head start.

“Cliff has already drawn the first several issues of ROAM, and I can’t wait for readers to see this breathtakingly original world he and our gifted collaborators Matt and Jared helped create,” Vaughan said. “Thanks so much to the readers and retailers out here who are up for exploring something new with us!”

Look at how he ends that statement. Vaughan describes Roam as a fresh direction, and he thanks the retailers who stock comics alongside the fans who buy them.

Chiang promises something new

Roam isn’t meant to be a second Paper Girls. Chiang said the series is a departure from the duo’s earlier work, though it comes from the same creative impulses.

“There’s no bigger thrill than breathing life into new worlds with your friends, that electric feeling of collaboration,” Chiang said. “ROAM is unlike anything Brian and I have done before, but inspired by our love for comics as a medium. It’s been a joy to reunite with our trusted teammates Matt Wilson and Jared Fletcher, and I’m incredibly grateful to Image Comics for continuing the creative partnership and exploration that began with Paper Girls.”

Beyond that, the creators are keeping quiet about the story. So far fans have a title, a cover, and two collaborators who clearly love being back together.

Release date and preorders

Roam #1 arrives in February 2027, and you can preorder it now at your local comic shop. If you’ve been waiting for this team since Paper Girls ended, or the TV adaptation made you curious about the comic it came from, your local shop is where to reserve a copy.

Chiang summed up what readers can expect in just a few words: “It’s going to be a wild ride!”
