Picture this: you hold up a traveler on the road near Valentine, steal his horse and gallop away. Most open-world games forget him the moment he’s out of sight. Install a new Red Dead Redemption 2 mod, though, and that same man could remember the robbery, nurse a grudge and, in time, decide Arthur Morgan has to die.

The mod, called enRAGE, is out now on PC. It lifts the concept behind one of the most discussed enemy systems in recent games and drops it into Rockstar’s Western.

A system that stayed locked in Middle-earth

Anyone who played Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor or Shadow of War will recognize the Nemesis system. Orcs kept track of their encounters with you, formed rivalries and returned to settle scores. A chance skirmish could grow into a personal feud that kept evolving, and that system is a large part of what made both games memorable.

The mechanic never spread beyond those two Middle-earth titles. One reason: Warner Bros. patented the technology in 2021, which restricted how other studios could use anything similar.

It makes sense, then, that a modder is the one reviving it. nicklovin99 built enRAGE, which hands Red Dead’s NPCs their own personalities, histories and motives for despising Arthur.

Every stranger comes with a history

Each NPC is given a name, a set of personality traits, family connections and a backstory stretching back years before your paths cross. Their temperament shapes how they respond to Arthur, and their memory determines whether a slight is forgotten or answered with revenge.

There are plenty of ways to earn an enemy. Robbing, insulting or beating someone, or taking their horse, can all eventually turn that person into your nemesis. Their anger can escalate from simple resentment to wanting Arthur dead. If they live through a shootout with you, they may return carrying scars or permanent injuries.

Death doesn’t close the matter. A victim’s friends and family can learn what happened and set out for vengeance of their own.

Conflicts that play out on their own

Personal grudges are the hook, but enRAGE pushes past what the Mordor games offered. A faction system covers eight outlaw gangs along with the U.S. Army, and each one has leaders, officers, camps, supplies and territory.

The factions hold rivalries with each other, and those can boil over into wars with or without your involvement. Take out an officer and a faction’s chain of command can shift. Raid its camps or cut its supply lines and it fights at a disadvantage.

Shadow of Mordor wanted enemies to come across as recurring characters instead of throwaway targets, and enRAGE aims for the same thing. On top of that, it wraps those enemies in a larger simulated world of changing alliances, turf wars and personal vendettas.

Interrogations, telegrams and the local paper

Some of the tools are less violent. Captured enemies can be interrogated for details on their leaders, hideouts and supplies. When a feud has dragged on long enough, you can attempt to end it with a telegram.

enRAGE also maintains an in-game chronicle of events across the world, and certain incidents end up printed in local newspapers.

Bugs are part of the deal for now

The mod is still in early access. Its creator cautions that bugs should be expected given how many systems are tied together.

You’ll need the PC version of Red Dead Redemption 2, and the mod is built for Story Mode, not Red Dead Online. So the man whose horse you took will be waiting for you in single-player.
