Arthur Morgan spent years staring at Mexico from the water’s edge with no way to get there. That border is now open.
Nuevo Paraíso – The Forgotten Frontier, a fan-made mod, is complete and available as a free download on PC. It takes one of the best-known locations from the original Red Dead Redemption and rebuilds it in the Red Dead Redemption 2 engine. It isn’t an official expansion, but Rockstar never released story DLC for the game, so this is about as close as players will get.
The border Rockstar kept closed
Anyone who played the first game will remember John Marston heading south into Mexico. That trip was one of the most memorable parts of the game. Red Dead Redemption 2 kept the region off-limits: you could see Mexico across the water, but you couldn’t go there. Fans have wanted to make that crossing ever since.
With no official story content DLC from Rockstar for Red Dead Redemption 2, a modder named Rixus724 took on the job. The project was first shown in August, and after a long development period it is now finished.
A version of Mexico set in 1907
Rixus724 didn’t just lift the original map and drop it into the new game, and that was the right call. Instead, the mod reimagines Nuevo Paraíso as it might have looked in 1907, the year in which Red Dead Redemption 2 is set.
The setting has its own story. Conflict, government oppression, military control and poverty shape the whole region. By the time players arrive, unrest is growing and the state is sliding toward civil war.

The official description of the mod says: “Explore the three regions of Nuevo Paraíso, now powered by the RDR2 Engine. From towns brought back from RDR1 to an expanded landscape featuring new wildlife and vegetation that breathe life and detail into the controversial state of Nuevo Paraíso. A wide variety of activities awaits to keep you busy as you traverse this forgotten frontier.”
Three regions, three different identities
The map is split into Diez Coronas, Perdido and Punta Orgullo. Each region has its own points of interest, buildings, wildlife and vegetation, so they don’t all blur into one long stretch of desert.
Nearby towns and settlements are back too. Each small community has its own daily routines, activities, services and functions. That kind of detail is a big part of why the base game’s world feels lived in, and it’s good to see it carried over here.

Trains, wildlife and plenty to do
The mod adds a new railroad system and new Mexican wildlife. For most players, though, the new activities will probably be the main attraction, since they’re designed to provide hours of content after the scenery stops being new.
Anyone who owns Red Dead Redemption 2 on PC can get the mod for free. If you’ve been looking for an excuse to start another playthrough, this is a good one. It’s also a tribute to the series’ history.

This time, Arthur doesn’t have to stand by the river and look at Mexico from a distance. He can ride across and keep going.
