What is Variance?
Variance is an anime-styled roguelike action RPG from Realm Studios, structured as a live-service experience rather than a static release. You play as Ella, progressing through endless enemy waves, advancing into fresh areas and obtaining progressively stronger powers throughout runs. Combat targets a high skill ceiling, and it incorporates gacha-style meta-progression, which is a deliberate and thoughtful pairing — the roguelike run rewards mechanical skill while the meta layer rewards investment across weeks. It is free-to-play and accessible on PC via Steam, with mobile planned and console expansion mentioned afterwards. The game participated in the Somnia ecosystem through Dream Catalyst in 2025 and positions its on-chain functionality on Somnia.
How to play Variance
Download on Steam and begin a run — wallet setup is not required to play. Each run drops Ella into procedurally created areas where you battle through growing challenges, obtain powers that reshape run dynamics, and attempt to progress further than before; dying ends the run but not account-level advancement, which is where the gacha component becomes relevant. The studio conducted public alpha tests to develop the title transparently, with the initial version attracting over 8,800 organic alpha participants and retaining roughly 31 percent after one month — genuinely strong retention for an alpha, and a more reliable indicator than marketing statements. Features, reward boxes and systems have been expanded and adjusted across test phases.
Variance tokenomics & earning
The on-chain component shipped as the Variance Collection, a set of procedurally generated Variants minted on Somnia mainnet. These serve as personalized digital representations instead of power items: ownership gives in-game perks, Aura payouts and early content access. Initial NFT sales reportedly generated 60,000 USD, which is modest and honest for a project at this phase. No per-run token payout exists, and base gameplay stays free without ownership requirements, so earning potential here revolves around whether Variants appreciate as the project expands.
