Google Play Enables New Blockchain-Based Experiences

Google Play has recently updated its policies to enable new modes of blockchain-based transactions within apps and games. This initiative was announced by Joseph Mills, Group Product Manager of Google Play, aiming to foster innovation while ensuring user safety.

According to Mills, this change stems from Google Play’s ongoing commitment to helping developers materialize innovative ideas. With an array of blockchain apps currently available, the platform sees potential for developers to expand their offerings, particularly through tokenized digital assets like Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs). The main challenge lies in aligning innovation with user protection, which Google Play seeks to achieve by promoting responsible, safe, transparent, and trusted app experiences.

Safeguarding Users Amid Technological Advancements

As part of the policy update, Google Play emphasizes the importance of app transparency in terms of tokenized digital assets. Developers must clearly indicate if an app or game facilitates selling or earning these assets. While tokenized assets promise richer user experiences, developers are prohibited from promoting or embellishing any potential earnings related to gameplay or trading.

Further aligning with Google Play’s existing policies, apps that fail to meet gambling eligibility requirements will not be allowed to accept payments for the chance to win assets of unclear real-world value, including NFTs. This rule extends to purchases where the value of the received NFT isn’t clear at the time of transaction.

Enabling Industry-Wide Innovation

By amending their guidelines, Google Play has demonstrated its commitment to fostering developer success. The platform worked closely with app and game developers to shape these changes, reflecting their input on how Google Play can best support their enterprises.

Industry leaders have already shown their support for these updated guidelines. John Linden, CEO of Mythical Games, acknowledged Google’s collaborative approach and the potential positive impact on new technology adoption and consumer protection. Similarly, Matt Williamson, Senior Engineering Manager at Reddit, expressed his approval of Google’s responsible approach to blockchain content.

Eyeing Future Blockchain Opportunities

Google Play intends to maintain an ongoing dialogue with developers to comprehend their challenges and opportunities. The next phase involves discussions with industry partners to enhance the platform’s support for blockchain-based app experiences. For now, Google Play anticipates that its new blockchain policy will introduce more engaging and enjoyable user experiences across various apps and games.
