In Brief:

  • On Oct. 22, Gorecats released Splat-a-Gorecat, a browser game made in partnership with Collector Crypt.
  • A round costs 0.008 SOL. Players who splat one of the three Rare Gorecats in the prize pool are guaranteed a $25, $50 or $100 Pokémon gacha pack.
  • Winners can rip the packs they earn, and according to the team, a pull could produce a $5k card.

Collector Crypt has partnered with Gorecats on Splat-a-Gorecat, a new game that charges SOL for each round and hands out Pokémon gacha packs as prizes.

Gorecats revealed the launch in an X post on Oct. 22. “SPLAT-A-GORECAT IS LIVE,” it read, adding that players could “Hit a Rare Gorecat to win a Pokémon Gacha Pack, then rip it for a shot at a $5k card.” The game is playable at splat.gorecats.io.

What it costs to play

One standard game costs 0.008 SOL. Players who want better chances can pick Super Splat mode for 0.04 SOL, which Gorecats said offers five times better odds of winning prizes.

The team describes Splat-a-Gorecat as a game of skill. A five-part thread that went out with the announcement said a player’s chances improve the longer they survive in a round.

Prizes: rares, packs and crates

Three Rare Gorecats sit in the prize pool. Per the thread, splatting one guarantees a Pokémon gacha pack worth $25, $50 or $100.

Winners can rip those packs afterwards. The thread said that opens the door to bigger pulls “up to $500+ EPICS,” while the launch post set the ceiling at a $5k card.

A Mystery Crate also appears in every round. Hit it and a Mystery Prize Spin kicks in once the game is over, with possible rewards including weapons, extra lives, GCATS or gacha packs.

Inside a round

The goal is to splat Gorecats before they fall while steering clear of bombs, dynamite and toxic barrels. Letting a Gorecat slip past or striking a hazard takes away a life.

Players begin with three lives. According to Gorecats, earning XP can push that number up to nine.

A live feed of recent wins runs on the landing page, and one entry shows a player who won a shotgun.

First reactions

Collector Crypt responded to the launch post within minutes. “Lets Splat some Cats!” the account wrote.

Solana Gaming chimed in as well. “Collectible gaming ftw 💥” the account wrote.

Some replies were critical. One user pointed to the 0.008 SOL entry fee and labeled the game a cash grab. Late on launch night, another asked whether the game was still live since it wasn’t loading, and a third player replied that it was.

By the following day, the announcement had passed 15,500 views and drawn 30 replies.

Background

Gorecats is the work of StudioNX, the Emmy-winning animation duo behind the project, based in Bristol, UK. It began as a pixel-art NFT collection on Magic Eden, made up of 1,111 Gorecats ranked by levels of gore, with ultra-rare animated one-of-ones among them. The project’s rule was “The gorier your cat, the rarer your collectible.”

These days the project bills itself as “Powered by $GCATS.” Its earlier release, Rise of the Gorecats, is a top-down survival shooter with a beta on itch.io, and the team has promoted it on the dApp Store and PSG1.

On X, the Gorecats profile sets out the project’s planned route as “Seeker ➝ PSG1 ➝ Steam ➝ Roblox.” In a recent post, the team said a Roblox game is in production and described the Poki listing for Rise of Gorecats as “APPROVED.”

Collector Crypt has done this kind of partnership before. Rosentica: One Arena, another Solana game, advertises online battles with real-world TCG cards where players can win packs, in partnership with Collector Crypt and MagicBlock.
