GTA 6 gym and weight system: what the bench press footage suggests about fitness, food and sleep

For a few seconds in the GTA 6 Extended Look, Lucia lies on a bench and presses a bar up and lowers it again. That short clip is the first proper clue to how the game could treat exercise, and San Andreas players will recognise where it seems to be going.

The signs suggest Grand Theft Auto 6 brings back the gym and weight system from San Andreas. Rockstar Games hasn’t explained the whole system yet, so this is a fair interpretation of the footage released so far. In that model, Jason’s and Lucia’s bodies depend on how you look after them. Poor eating, missed workouts or too little sleep could stop them from reaching their full potential, while a disciplined routine keeps them fit.

Three stats, with only one shown so far

The system appears to rest on three building blocks, and food and exercise look like two of them. Nobody has seen any exercise other than the bench press. The gym might also have treadmills, weightlifting and rowing, but that’s guesswork. We won’t know the full list until launch, which is currently set for November 19, 2026.

Training away from the gym is also unconfirmed. Swimming, running and wrestling could reasonably count toward the same stats. In San Andreas, CJ built his fitness by running and cycling, so it would be logical for Jason and Lucia to work the same way.

The third stat is probably sleep, and it could have teeth. A character who skips it might aim less accurately or deal with a blurred screen. GTA 6 may be locked at 30 FPS on console, and fighting through a mission with a blurry view at 30 frames a second sounds awful.

Results probably won’t come fast. One playthrough could last more than 80 hours, which could add up to months of in-game time. A single gym session likely won’t change much. As in real life, you’d need to keep at it.

Eat too many sandwiches and the jeans get tight

San Andreas rules will likely apply again. If Jason and Lucia overeat or quit training completely, they can gain weight.

That extra weight might affect how their clothes fit. If so, stashing a spare outfit or two in a car trunk could be smart, using the trunk storage feature reported for GTA 6.

Working out should be worth the effort. It could tone muscle, add bulk and let your character eat more while gaining less weight. Larger health bars might come with it. None of this can be confirmed until the game releases, so treat it all as speculation.

Sleep could be a boost or a penalty

A protagonist who’s slept well might earn a small stat buff. Lots of games give out temporary bonuses for sleeping a certain number of hours, including Rockstar's own Red Dead Redemption 2. Sleep could also connect to the weight system and influence how fit your characters are and how well they perform.

Without enough rest, Jason and Lucia might get tired and train less efficiently, so keeping in shape would be harder. A trick for escaping police car chases could help them reach a safehouse sooner to sleep.

Sleep loss might also be purely cosmetic, making them look worn out without touching the gameplay. GTA 6’s story revolves around money, and juggling sleep deprivation (theirs or yours) wouldn’t be much fun. Rockstar could still punish characters who stay up too long. For now, nobody knows.

Two bodies to manage

Yes, you can change Jason’s and Lucia’s body types, depending on how you use the system.

Because they’re separate characters, one could train at the gym while the other scouts a heist location. On a lazy day, you could call a car on the in-game Ryde Me taxi app instead of walking. All of it will probably count toward their fitness.

Play as one protagonist for too long and the other might fall out of shape. You can phone Jason or Lucia to meet up and work out together as a couple, which could improve both their fitness and their relationship.

How big or how ripped is still a mystery

There’s no word on how muscular or heavy either character can become. Rockstar Games hasn’t shared the full details of the weight system.

It’s also not clear whether repeating the same habits again and again lets you steer toward a particular body type.

Picture Jason eating 10 Prairie Sandwich Box Meals at once. Does he swell up, or does he turn down the next one when he’s full? That’s unknown.

Reports do say GTA 6’s map is roughly two times the size of GTA 5’s and RDR 2’s. Jason could likely walk off those 300,000 calories sooner or later.

Will weight affect gameplay?

Weight will alter how Jason and Lucia look. Whether it alters how they play remains an open question.

In San Andreas, weight was linked to CJ’s stats. Too much of it drained his stamina faster, and a fitter CJ could run for longer.

It wouldn’t be surprising for Rockstar to give GTA 6 body-based stats for the sake of realism. The game reportedly has a Criminal Profile that shifts according to what Lucia and Jason do, and the weight system could respond to your choices the same way.

That leaves you with a decision: buff Lucia or buff Jason?
