Mistfall Hunter is an extraction action-RPG dressed in fantasy, and since arriving on PC and Xbox Series X/S on July 30 it has taken over Game Pass and the charts. In a category as packed as this one, that alone would qualify as a surprise. The stranger part is that the complaints have been loud and the players have kept turning up anyway.

What you’re actually playing

You play a Gyldhunter, brought back to life by an enigmatic woman called Dew and given an assignment: gather the Gyldenblood and repair the Web of Fate. It’s a grim setting. Scavenging and combat can be tackled solo, or with friends in tow.

That’s the sales pitch from Bellring Games and Skystone Games, and it landed. Steam saw a peak of 44.5k. Shortly after release, the official Mistfall Hunter X account marked the one-million-player threshold.

A share of that traffic comes down to the game costing nothing through Game Pass. What that doesn’t account for is why the audience stayed put despite the reviews.

The complaints are specific, and they’re not small

Region locking tops the list. Anyone outside a player’s own region is off-limits, friends included, which is an awkward restriction in a game designed around teaming up.

Lag is the next issue. According to players, the servers make PvP especially aggravating.

There are also reports of people unable to get past character creation at all, and of spambots clogging up chat. Put the whole pile together and a newcomer has plenty of reasons to walk away before finishing a single proper run.

Bellring’s answer is a roadmap, not an apology

So far the studio has said nothing about any of the grievances. What it has offered instead is talk of what’s ahead.

Bellring Games paired the player milestone announcement with a roadmap laying out fresh seasonal tasks, weapons, monsters and events, along with a teaser for a season two theme.

It’s a decision worth noting. With so many extraction titles chasing the same audience, the team is choosing not to put fixes first to hold onto the crowd that arrived in week one.

A new season is on the way. Updates are on the schedule. Meanwhile the one-star reviews keep accumulating, and Mistfall Hunter remains the biggest game in the room.
