A sequel to Hogwarts Legacy is officially in production — Warner Bros. said so to its investors. Nothing more. That was the announcement.
There was no trailer, no release window, not even a screenshot of a marginally prettier Great Hall. Instead, the reveal sat tucked inside a recent earnings report, arguably the least magical venue a wizarding game has ever debuted in.
What the filing actually states
Warner Bros. referred to a “second installment” of Hogwarts Legacy while describing its growing pipeline, positioning the title as something that will genuinely move the financial needle.
“We expect games to more meaningfully contribute to segment profitability going forward as our pipeline expands, including the second installment of Hogwarts Legacy,” the report said.
Translated out of investor-speak, that means: this is going to print money, so hold onto your shares. Even so, it marks the moment the sequel graduated from “priority” to something actively being built.
This was never going to go any other way
The studio had already flagged a follow-up as a major priority once the original released. Look at the sales figures and it’s obvious why nobody internally had to be talked into it.
Hogwarts Legacy has sold 40 million copies, which places it in the conversation for best-selling games of all time. Back in 2023, it became the first release since 2009 to top the annual sales charts without being a Call of Duty or a Rockstar title.
Snap a streak like that and the question stops being whether you’d like to make a sequel. You simply get handed a budget.
The TV series will handle the hype
Harry Potter is enjoying a second wind at Warner Bros. regardless. The HBO adaptation reboots the franchise this Christmas, and a second season is already in motion with a cast that includes Nicholas Hoult.
A production on that scale is bound to drag fresh attention toward the brand — pure upside for a game sequel landing somewhere in its wake.
When it might actually land
Given that the original shipped in 2023, a follow-up arriving by late 2028 would raise no eyebrows. An earlier date isn’t out of the question.
The map has plenty of space to expand into, but the costly groundwork is finished. Hogwarts and its surroundings already exist as assets, and recycling them is the quickest route to shipping.
Then again, the reverse could happen: the first game’s ridiculous success may hand the team extra time and budget to swing harder than they managed before. Each scenario points to a very different launch date.
And there’s the enjoyable guesswork, too. Rumors put the PS6 in fall 2027. A wizarding open world headlining a new console’s launch is exactly the sort of arrangement platform holders pay enormous sums to secure.
Right now, though, the entire story is a single sentence in a financial document. More wizarding adventures are on the way. Everything else is a problem for some future quarter.
