More than $680. That’s the reported price of just the memory and storage in one PlayStation 6, and it doesn’t include the chip, the case, the controller or the box it comes in.

The figure was shared by KeplerL2, an AMD insider with a history of passing along information. This latest post spread quickly across social media, and it’s easy to see why: $680 is higher than the PS5’s launch price.

How a console reaches four figures

KeplerL2 says the RAM and NAND storage inside each PS6 come to more than $680. If that’s accurate, Sony’s next console could end up with a very steep price. The rumor now circulating puts it well past $1,000.

One detail is worth noting. KeplerL2 also said those same parts were significantly cheaper back when Sony locked in the PS6 design. The $680 number reflects current market prices, which aren’t the prices Sony was planning around.

Prices are up across the board

The wider market makes the rumor believable. Global component shortages have hit hardware hard, and many companies have raised prices more than once.

Console buyers have likely noticed. The PS5 costs noticeably more now than it did at its 2020 launch. The PS5 Pro launched at 800 euros, rose to 900, and in some stores has climbed as high as 1,400 euros.

Microsoft could beat Sony to launch

Sony has competition on next-gen hardware. Microsoft is already working on Project Helix, which is expected to launch, probably ahead of the PS6.

Microsoft has said it needs to consider new business models to keep costs affordable. Given current RAM and storage prices, that statement is a fairly direct acknowledgment of the problem.
