Back in June, Sony pulled the plug on Hideo Kojima’s next game. No announcement followed. Three months on, the project belongs to Xbox.
That is the compressed account of a Wednesday that rewrote one of the industry’s most scrutinized partnerships. Physint, the action-espionage title Kojima revealed with plenty of fanfare in early 2024, is now heading to publication under Xbox rather than PlayStation. And Physint may not be the only piece of it.
“We found in Xbox a partner with whom we share a common vision for the future, and we have decided to team up with them once again,” the Metal Gear Solid creator wrote on X.
Sony went first, and it went quietly
The news arrived in rapid succession, with PlayStation getting out ahead of everyone. “After careful consideration, we have made the difficult decision to step away from collaborating with Kojima Productions on its project Physint,” Sony’s gaming division said in a post on X. The statement went on to say the company looked forward to continued “close collaboration” with Kojima’s studio down the line.
Quite a bit of corporate warmth packed into a sentence that terminates a partnership.
Sixty seconds later came a post from Xbox CEO Asha Sharma confirming that Xbox had taken the project on. “Physint and OD!” she wrote, nodding to a separate Kojima–Xbox collaboration. “Proud to build both with @HIDEO_KOJIMA_EN in Japan. A big moment for Xbox.”
Kojima’s version fills in the gap
Kojima followed with an X post of his own, and it is his timeline that rewards a second read. “In mid-June of this year, we unexpectedly received notice from PlayStation Studios that they would cancel the Physint project,” the post stated. “Physint is an important project both to me personally and to Kojima Productions. Determined to keep the project alive, we have spent the last three months searching tirelessly for a new partner” — a search that ended at Xbox.
Unexpectedly. Tirelessly. Three months. Sony’s call caught him off guard, and he made no effort to hide it.
The deal goes past games
An Xbox Wire post spelled out how far the arrangement reaches: “In addition to OD and Physint, this relationship will also extend beyond games, with Xbox and Kojima Productions collaborating across film and television to bring new stories to broader audiences.”
Film and television — and that is precisely where the story sharpens, because that territory was meant to be Sony’s play.
What did Sony see that we didn’t
All of this raises the question of what was happening inside Physint’s development that convinced Sony to walk, fully aware the decision risked unflattering headlines and a bruised relationship with Kojima. Firms rarely accept that trade-off unless the numbers turned sour somewhere along the line.
Sony, after all, did not back into this one. Head of PlayStation Studios Hermen Hulst appeared in person to unveil Physint next to Kojima. And as that announcement video wrapped, the camera pulled back on a Columbia Pictures logo — a hint that the game might branch into films or other IP.
That logo carried the entire promise. It now sits in somebody else’s press release.
