Physical Xbox games on your shelf now have a new use. Microsoft has moved its disc-to-digital feature out of Xbox Insiders testing and made it available to players around the world, which means the discs you already own can now come with a digital license too.
If you didn’t follow the Insiders phase, here’s how it works. Put a disc into an Xbox One or Xbox Series X console and start the game. If the title is supported, you’ll get a notification that a digital license is ready to claim.
Nothing changes for the disc itself, which works the same as it always has. You get a license on top of it, and you don’t give anything up.
Thousands of supported games, plus some fine print
According to Microsoft, thousands of titles are supported at launch, and more are being added on an ongoing basis. The company also admitted that the catalog is still incomplete.
“While not every title may be supported from day one, this is a significant step toward a future where players can be more confident that the games they buy will remain in their library and can be enjoyed for years to come,” Microsoft said.
Officially, the idea is simple. Microsoft may grant a digital license linked to a qualifying Xbox One or Xbox Series X disc. With that license, you can play supported digital versions of the game without the disc sitting in the drive.
Pay attention to the word “may.” Some discs won’t qualify, and Microsoft said eligibility could change over time because of technical, licensing, publishing and manufacturing factors, among other things.
Ownership rules are the catch
This section matters most. The digital license stays tied to the specific physical disc that unlocked it, so if that disc is no longer yours, you could lose the digital benefits.
Microsoft spells it out: if you lose, sell or gift the disc, or stop owning it in any other way, access to the linked license may be restricted or revoked. (In other words, you can’t claim the license and then trade the disc in at your local store. Microsoft anticipated that trick.)
Microsoft’s own announcement stuck to the upside and left all of that out. “Your discs just got a digital upgrade today! 💿 Now, all players can experience the benefits of digital with most XBOX Series X and XBOX One physical discs,” Microsoft said.
That’s accurate enough, provided you notice the word “most” and keep the disc.
