Hogwarts is under siege — and this time, whether that counts as a disaster is entirely up to you.

That premise sits at the heart of Defenders of Hogwarts, an officially licensed board game whose funding campaign ran on Kickstarter and invited players to choose an allegiance in the battle for the castle. Faithful student, or Dark Forces recruit. The decision is yours.

Funding has now wrapped. The campaign pulled in more than $1.2 million and moved directly into production off the back of that total.

The people behind it know the material

Development comes from MinaLima, the graphic design duo behind the visual identity of the Harry Potter film universe. This is how they frame what’s on the way:

“Hogwarts is under attack… Decide its fate in a spellbinding new board game from MinaLima, the graphic designers of the Harry Potter film universe. Lord Voldemort’s arrival at the castle is imminent. Prepare for what lies ahead by honing your spell-casting skills, exploring the storied grounds of Hogwarts, and laying the groundwork for a battle between good and evil.”

Then comes the line that really counts: “But will you do so as a loyal Hogwarts student, or as a member of the Dark Forces, seeking to bring about a new era of darkness? The choice is yours.”

Why picking a side is the whole hook

That allegiance mechanic is the element with real potential to set this apart from everything else carrying the Harry Potter branding.

Granted, Hogwarts Legacy already hands you the dark arts to use as liberally as you want. But that title unfolds in an entirely different period, and toying with Unforgivable Curses isn’t remotely the same as pledging yourself to Voldemort. The first is a lapse in judgement. The second is signing up.

The franchise is having a moment

The Wizarding World has been pushed back into the spotlight across roughly the last year, with several significant projects in the pipeline. Leading the charge is HBO’s adaptation, which will retell the books — this time with far more depth than the films were able to fit in.

A Hogwarts Legacy follow-up is also in development. As things stand, the intention is to link it tightly to that HBO series, although what that translates to in practice remains unclear. It may turn out to be a very different beast from the original, which was a commercial smash.

You can still get in

Letting the Kickstarter deadline slip by isn’t the end of the road. Late pledges for Defenders of Hogwarts remain available across a number of tiers.

Enough, at least, to keep your hands busy while HBO takes its sweet time.
