OpenSea launched in December 2017 as one of the first general marketplaces for buying and selling non-fungible tokens on Ethereum. It has since expanded to support collections across more than twenty chains, including Base, Polygon, Arbitrum, Optimism, Avalanche and Solana.
OpenSea charges a 1% fee on the sale price when an item sells. Creator earnings are configurable per collection: OpenSea treats them as optional by default and enforces payment only on collections built with a royalty-enforcing token standard such as ERC-721C.
