GTA 6 apparently ditches the romance meter entirely.
That detail leads a new report describing how Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos operate as a couple, and it upends plenty of assumptions players have carried since the first trailer. Rather than a visible bar you grind upward, their relationship is reportedly expressed through a set of different states.
One caveat before going further: all of this originates from a report, not from a Rockstar Games announcement. Until Rockstar confirms anything, treat the specifics as reporting.
What Rockstar has actually said
What the studio has confirmed is that the two share a complicated history and lean on one another heavily over the course of the game. That dynamic anchors the core story.
Whether things turn romantic, however, is reportedly your call. Two players could finish GTA 6 from beginning to end and walk away with meaningfully different versions of Jason and Lucia.
You build the dates yourself
Dating reportedly abandons the rigid structure players trudged through in GTA: San Andreas and GTA 4. Rather than selecting from a menu of sanctioned outings and watching a number climb, players effectively assemble their own dates by picking activities for Jason and Lucia to share.
A trip to the zoo. Kayaking. A walk along the beach. Or simply doing something else together in the same spot at the same moment.
A few reportedly grow out of whatever you happened to be doing anyway. Head to the gym as Jason or Lucia and the other character may turn up to train beside you, quietly turning the errand into a date.
The small stuff carries the weight
The pair can reportedly trade texts, say goodnight, hold hands, and stroll with their arms linked. None of that feeds into a progression system. Instead, the pile-up of tiny interactions handles what a meter would normally handle badly.
Earlier Grand Theft Auto entries framed dating as a strict mechanic complete with its own rules and failure states. What’s described here is far looser, allowing the relationship to grow out of the wider gameplay rather than sitting inside a separate menu.
Nobody’s getting jealous
This next piece should come as a relief to anyone who recalls managing a girlfriend’s mood in an older GTA. Reportedly, Jason and Lucia won’t be perpetually getting jealous of each other over the player’s actions.
Dropping by a strip club in GTA 6 reportedly won’t spark sudden relationship drama. They also reportedly won’t turn on players who build out different Criminal Profiles for each of the two characters.
It’s an intentional decision, and a sound one. Flexibility in relationship systems tends to sour into busywork, and the reported design keeps the bond substantial without adding another thing to juggle between heists.
Partners in crime, or more
Where it goes is reportedly the player’s choice. You can keep Jason and Lucia as nothing more than two criminals who need each other to stay alive, or you can lean into the romance as their time together adds up.
Both interpretations hold. Neither gets forced on you. That hands their dynamic far more breathing room than a conventional dating progression system ever could — which is precisely the case for scrapping the meter to begin with.
Somewhere inside that reported version of the game, two people who pulled a robbery together in the afternoon are strolling down a beach at night with their arms linked, texting each other goodnight an hour after that, and the game never tells you once what any of it means.
