Open Campus, a decentralized education protocol, has received a huge grant from the Arbitrum Foundation to launch EDU Chain, a groundbreaking Layer 3 blockchain designed specifically for the educational sector. This marks the first initiative of its kind, using Arbitrum Orbit Stack technology to improve educational content and tools through blockchain technology.

The partnership between Open Campus and the Arbitrum Foundation is set to empower the “Learn Own Earn” model, integrating blockchain’s power of ownership with educational processes. EDU Chain will function as a platform where developers can build decentralized applications (dapps) that cater to both learners and educators.

This move is anticipated to transform how educational achievements are recorded and accessed, leveraging the vast network of over 60 educational and Web3 companies connected with Open Campus.

Yat Siu, the co-founder and executive chairman of Animoca Brands and a member of the EDU Foundation Council, said: “This grant is an exciting step forward in the vision of Open Campus and EDU Chain to use blockchain technology to address current problems and challenges in education. The support of and collaboration with the Arbitrum Foundation positions us to redefine the education industry, leveraging the power of decentralization and the Arbitrum ecosystem to enhance access to and opportunities in education for both learners and educators.”

EDU Chain will utilize the Arbitrum Orbit Stack for its Layer 3 rollup, ensuring transactions are settled efficiently on Arbitrum’s Layer 2 solutions. This technical setup is expected to bring Ethereum-level security to educational transactions while offering greater scalability — essential for handling the needs of 20 million learners and numerous educational apps.

Additionally, this collaboration will include Open Campus’s participation in the Arbitrum Ambassador Program and various hackathon competitions, incentivizing the development community to contribute to this educational blockchain.

The initiative is also set to expand by linking with 96 active Arbitrum ambassadors and 26 universities to bolster educational content creation. This extensive community involvement aims to enrich the educational offerings on the EDU Chain and ensure a broad base of academic resources and tools is available to users.
