Grand Theft Auto 6 will not be the last thing to carry Rockstar’s name for long. Its successor is already deep in production — only not inside Rockstar’s own walls.
Once GTA 6 arrives on its confirmed November 19, 2026 launch date, the next title Rockstar publishes will be Remedy Entertainment’s Max Payne 1 & 2 Remake. Remedy is combining the two original games into one package built on its proprietary Northlight engine, targeting PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Rockstar is footing the bill, and it will also take care of publishing and distribution.
Why the remake is the safe bet
On Remedy’s own slate the project is marked as in development, having moved into full production back in 2024. A release date has not been set, so nobody can claim with 100% certainty that Max Payne ships ahead of every other Rockstar-branded product.
Consider the other options, though. Building a full Grand Theft Auto or Red Dead Redemption entry takes years, and there is no internally developed GTA sequel or Red Dead sequel currently on the schedule. On balance, that leaves the Max Payne remake as the most probable next release under the Rockstar banner.
What happens to GTA 6 after launch
Beyond the remake, the obvious destination for Rockstar’s resources is post-launch support for GTA 6. Exactly what that support means for players has not been spelled out, and details remain scarce.
At present Rockstar frames GTA 6 as a single-player experience. It has not officially announced or described a fresh GTA Online component, even though a new online mode is all but officially confirmed to be coming.
History offers a clue here. Rockstar handles online GTA as its own product, and GTA Online is sold as a standalone title on current-generation consoles. Expect the same pattern with GTA 6 — which would mean the game most people are counting down to and the game that keeps Rockstar’s servers busy for the next decade might ship as two separate boxes.
