Hardly anyone has laid eyes on Signal One yet. September 4 changes that, when the 87-minute sci-fi mystery arrives on Hulu with David Thewlis among the cast.

The name might not click right away, but the face will. Thewlis was Remus Lupin throughout the Wizarding World, debuting in 2004’s Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban and wrapping up his stint in Deathly Hallows: Part 2.

The werewolf professor is far from the whole story, though. Naked and Kingdom of Heaven are both on his resume as well.

What the movie is actually about

Set for 2026, the film centers on a computer scientist who signs on with a tech billionaire to work on a project capable of changing humanity for good. Beyond that premise, the movie keeps its cards close.

Thewlis doesn’t shoulder it by himself. Isabelle Fuhrman, Dennis Quaid and Josh Hutcherson fill out the cast — meaning a Harry Potter alum shares the frame with two former Hunger Games stars.

Why you’ve never heard of it

This is the piece that accounts for the near-total silence surrounding the project. Signal One premiered at the Sci-Fi London Film Festival in May, followed by a tiny theatrical bow in early June.

That word “tiny” is pulling real weight. The rollout was so limited that the film has no box office total to speak of, and it never went international.

Which is why the Hulu date carries more weight than streaming dates normally do. It’s the movie’s first real chance at an audience not counted in festival badges.

The reviews are on its side

Reviews are thin on the ground, which is what you’d expect given the release strategy. Even so, Signal One carries an 80% Tomatometer on Rotten Tomatoes, meaning the critics who did catch it mostly liked what they saw.

Two elements draw most of the praise: the premise, and the character work, which reviewers attributed to strong performances. The Popcornmeter stands at 67% — the figure Hulu viewers will now push in one direction or the other.

Landing on a streaming platform at all counts as a decent signal for a film that barely screened anywhere. Enough people noticed.
