One word from Matt Selman at D23 landed less like a joke and more like damage control.
Fielding a question about whether The Simpsons: Hit & Run might finally get a sequel, series creator Matt Groening offered, “I think the original game is coming back in some form.” Selman, the show’s current showrunner, cut in immediately: “or not.”
Rewatch the moment. The tone in both voices, backed up by the body language, tells the same story: Groening seems to have said something he hadn’t been given clearance to say.
Actually playing it today is a real problem
The game launched back in 2003 across PlayStation 2, Xbox, GameCube and Windows. Wrangling it onto a modern PC is achievable. Wrangling it onto a modern console is not.
You won’t find it in the PlayStation Plus Classics Catalog, and it’s missing from the Xbox backward compatibility list too. That vacuum is precisely why an offhand line from Groening carries weight — there’s an obvious hole waiting to be filled.
A plain port would be the dull outcome
Read “coming back in some form” the simplest way and you get a straight port dropped into one of those catalogs. Fine, as far as it goes. Also the least exciting possibility on the table.
The outcome actually worth rooting for is a full HD remaster — and the budget for that is less daunting than you’d assume, since there’s no need to record the voice work again. The original cast got it right on the first pass.
So what should you do with this?
Keep your wallet closed. Nothing has been announced — no release date, no platform lineup, only a stray sentence from a creator and a showrunner’s rapid correction.
An HD remaster of this cult classic is well past due. But until somebody confirms one exists, PC remains your only realistic option. Alright, mindless drones, return to your ugly families.
