Official word on GTA 6’s multiplayer has yet to come from Rockstar Games. It has come from the head of Twitch.
Dan Clancy says he knows “a few things” about the online side of Grand Theft Auto VI, and during a recent Bloomberg interview he attached a year to it: 2027. Again, that is his assertion rather than anything Rockstar has announced. The studio has yet to say a single word about the multiplayer component.
A November 19 release is expected for Grand Theft Auto VI on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, capping years of build-up. Rockstar has billed the new entry as the “next great single-player experience,” a phrase that makes the launch-day priority fairly obvious. The other half is what everyone is curious about regardless — specifically, the shape of the next GTA Online.
What Clancy actually said
According to Clancy, he has logged considerable time with Rockstar Games and is aware that the multiplayer is coming in 2027. Here is how he framed it to Bloomberg:
“We’ve spent a lot of time with Rockstar and we know their plans. We’ve also helped them think through exactly how it can collaborate and interact with our content creators. With GTA 6, we expect to see a massive surge (in numbers), but next year, when the multiplayer launches, that surge will be even greater.”
That deserves a moment of scrutiny. What you have here is a platform executive promoting viewership figures for his own service, relaying roadmaps he says were shared with him behind closed doors. It amounts to an unverified secondhand account rather than a date from Rockstar or Take-Two, and neither company has corroborated it.
The GTA V playbook doesn’t apply
This is where 2027 starts to feel odd. Grand Theft Auto Online went live October 1, 2013 — a mere fortnight after Grand Theft Auto V hit shelves on September 17, 2013.
Two weeks.
Should Clancy’s timeline hold up, the gap this time around runs far longer than that. The campaign would keep you occupied for quite a stretch before anyone hands you a lobby and a friends list.
Rockstar, meanwhile, has neither confirmed nor denied any part of it, leaving the sole date in circulation in the hands of someone who runs a streaming service.
The old one isn’t going anywhere
Not that any of this really leaves players stranded. GTA Online has absorbed dozens of updates since it arrived in 2013, stuffed with fresh missions, heists, businesses, vehicles and activities.
The thing has been live for more than ten years. Regardless of what 2027 delivers or fails to deliver, that server is online tonight, still selling you a garage you have no use for.
