In Brief:
- Wirex, Crossmint, and the Stellar Development Foundation are teaming up with Barça Mobile to build a digital wallet into the operator’s app.
- The tie-up is meant to simplify payments and loyalty rewards for subscribers spread across 170 countries.
- Industry watchers see the move as a fresh distribution route for bringing users into web3 gaming.
Barça Mobile integrates digital wallet
A digital wallet is coming straight to the Barça Mobile app, courtesy of a partnership between FC Barcelona’s telecom arm, Wirex, Crossmint, and the Stellar Development Foundation. Announced on August 5, 2026, the deal bolts payment features onto the operator’s current service rather than spinning up a standalone product.
The roles are clearly divided among the parties involved. New Era Visionary Group, the telecom operator running Barça Mobile, is steering the project. Payment rails come from Wirex, the wallet technology comes from Crossmint, and the Stellar Development Foundation contributes a blockchain network built for low-cost transactions.
Wallet features and functionality
Subscriber needs shaped how the wallet was built. It handles mobile services, runs payments, connects card spending, and keeps tabs on loyalty rewards. Travel services and cross-border digital utilities are slated to arrive later.
Because Wirex works with Visa and Mastercard, balances can be spent at more than 80 million merchants worldwide. In practice, settlement happens on a blockchain layer while the purchase itself runs through conventional card networks.
Ruslan Bîrlădeanu, CEO of New Era Visionary Group, underlined why the team folded the wallet into software subscribers already have. “By integrating wallet functionality directly into the Barça Mobile app, we are not launching a separate product,” he said.
Significance for users
There is no requirement to buy fan tokens or connect an outside wallet, which is worth noting. What subscribers get instead is quicker payments inside an app they already use daily — a departure from how most sports crypto products work.
The wider context of Barça Mobile
Barça Mobile arrived in April 2025 as a mobile virtual network operator riding on Orange’s infrastructure. With a travel eSIM product spanning more than 170 countries, adding international transfers was a natural next step.
The rollout carries real weight for Wirex and Crossmint. It is the first major consumer deployment of their infrastructure partnership, handing them a high-visibility proving ground in front of a global audience.
Web3 gaming implications
Gaming isn’t part of the wallet itself, yet the approach mirrors a distribution playbook plenty of web3 titles have chased. Onboarding remains one of web3’s stubborn hurdles, since players are typically asked to set up an external wallet and grasp blockchain fundamentals before they ever start playing.
What Crossmint’s integration does is strip that friction away, spinning up wallets inside an app made for mobile services while the blockchain layer stays out of sight.
Stellar fits neatly into that thinking, prioritizing cheap transactions rather than elaborate gaming mechanics. Studios looking to run loyalty schemes and reward structures without heavy overhead may take note of the template.
Taken together, the deal shows web3 infrastructure can ride mainstream channels — in this case a telecom brand tied to a globally recognized football club — hinting at a route for games to find larger audiences instead of depending on crypto-native environments alone.
