Somewhere in the dark, four players are on the trail of something. With every kill it swells larger, feeding its way across the map, and by the moment they finally have it cornered, the hunted has become the hunter.

That was Evolve, and you can play it once more.

The 2015 shooter has been brought back by a group of modders, multiplayer intact, running through a launcher of their own making. The effort comes from the Evolve Modded/Archive community. In a post on X, modder SnoreDollar said the game is now free to download thanks to the community’s work, and a Discord server hosts the launcher along with guidance on getting everything running.

Call it a rescue rather than a remaster.

Four hunters, one monster, no fair fight

Turtle Rock Studios released Evolve in February 2015 as its follow-up to Left 4 Dead, and for a big-budget shooter the concept was decidedly odd. A single player takes the role of an enormous monster. The other four form a Hunter squad divided into Assault, Trapper, Medic and Support, every role carrying a defined task during the chase.

Victory for the monster ran straight through the local wildlife. The idea was to stay out of sight, feed, grow, and finally hit a Stage 3 form strong enough to turn the whole match around. Before any of that could happen, the Hunters had to track it down and put it away.

The concept won critics over. On Metacritic, Evolve holds a 76 Metascore, with the unusual 4-vs.-1 structure and its competitive depth drawing the praise.

Everything surrounding it drew the criticism instead: longevity, the progression system, matchmaking, and the sheer share of any given match spent hunting for the monster rather than fighting it.

The genre Turtle Rock helped build without them

Look back a little further and the studio’s fingerprints turn up all over the place. Left 4 Dead stood among the biggest names multiplayer gaming had, a co-op shooter that pitted a band of survivors against AI zombie hordes and made four-player teamwork into a survival horror playground. It also did a great deal to popularize asymmetrical multiplayer, in which the two sides aren’t playing by the same rules at all.

The formula outlived it. Dead by Daylight took the one-vs-four horror idea and built a huge multiplayer hit out of it. Licensed horror came next: The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, Friday the 13th, Evil Dead. Resident Evil Resistance took its own shot at the format too.

Of all of them, Evolve swung about as ambitiously as anyone. It’s also the one that vanished.

What the reviews actually said

Writing in 2015, Polygon commended the game’s ambitious approach to asymmetrical multiplayer while pointing out that the four-versus-one setup could yield frustratingly lopsided matches. Its verdict described Evolve as “something different,” even where it fell short of realizing its potential.

That gap is more or less what the modders are aiming at. The design may have aged, but the community says its ‘Classic Plus’ should treat new and casual players better than the modern game did.

Eleven years later, the monster is out there again — and this time the hunt costs nothing.
