In Brief:

  • Porsche is shutting down its Web3 program together with the PIONEERS CIRCLE community.
  • Holders keep their PORSCHE 911 NFTs, and the tokens stay on the blockchain.
  • The shutdown shows how hard it is for brands to keep Web3 engagement going over time.

Porsche shuts down Web3 project

On October 1, Porsche said it is ending its Web3 initiative, and the PIONEERS CIRCLE community goes with it. The project started almost four years ago, when the carmaker launched its digital PORSCHE 911 collection.

Porsche stressed that current NFT holders will keep their tokens. The company confirmed it will not burn or revoke the PORSCHE 911 NFTs. “Existing 911 NFTs will stay with their current holders. The tokens will continue to exist on the blockchain even though the official project is closing,” Porsche stated. Some channels will change, though. The PIONEERS CIRCLE Discord will become a read-only archive, so members will have fewer ways to interact, and the project’s X account will stop posting updates.

In the announcement, Porsche looked back on its time in Web3. It said the goal had been to bring the Porsche spirit into the digital world and build an engaged community. The company did not say why it is closing the project.

Challenges in initial launch

The collection was unveiled at Art Basel Miami in December 2022, and minting began in January 2023. Porsche first planned to release 7,500 NFTs priced at 0.911 ETH each. Demand was weaker than expected, and while the sale was still running, secondary-market prices fell below the mint price.

After hearing from collectors, Porsche cut the supply and stopped minting. The final collection ended up at only 2,363 tokens. Floor prices partly recovered after the change, and the community became more exclusive as a result.

Community engagement efforts

Holders could customize their PORSCHE 911 NFTs by picking design paths for their digital cars. Through the PIONEERS CIRCLE community, members also met in person, including at events tied to Porsche’s motorsport program.

Trading had already slowed sharply before the shutdown was announced. Over its lifetime, the PORSCHE 911 collection recorded about $20 million in trading volume. That figure dropped to roughly $38,000 over the past year and to only $2,900 in the most recent month.

Industry parallels

The move is similar to what Nike did in December 2024, when it began winding down its RTFKT digital collectibles, a decision that led to legal challenges. Both companies entered NFTs during the 2021 to 2022 boom. Both later pulled back but let the tokens continue to exist.

Risks for NFT holders

With the official channels shutting down, scammers may have more room to operate, because holders could find it harder to check information about their assets. Porsche has told holders not to trust any migration or claim linked to the shutdown.

Implications for Web3 gaming

Porsche’s exit points to an ongoing problem in Web3: NFTs only hold their value as long as engagement continues. Without new updates or utility, the PORSCHE 911 tokens lose much of their purpose. Web3 gaming faces the same risk, and it is pushing many players toward titles whose assets can move beyond a single platform. Some projects have used licensed car NFTs before, so there may be chances to integrate abandoned collections and give their holders some utility again.
