Just seven games: the shrinking state of physical PlayStation sales in 2026

Seven. That’s the count of PlayStation games that have moved more than 100,000 physical copies in the United States since 2026 began.

We’re not talking seven blockbusters here. Seven in total — spanning every publisher and every PlayStation platform, the PS4 included.

The figure comes courtesy of Mat Piscatella, the games market analyst at Circana (previously NPD), and it arrives at the worst conceivable time for anyone still committed to discs. PlayStation has confirmed that it will halt production of new disc-based titles as of January 2028. What used to look like a gradual decline now reads as a countdown.

The week that said it all

Piscatella singled out the week ending July 11 as the giveaway. Over that period, just two PlayStation titles sold more than 10,000 physical copies in the US.

Two.

He was careful to point out that the year-long totals span games from every publisher and every PlayStation platform, PS4 among them. This isn’t a PS5-only reading or a hand-picked window. It captures the entire shelf — and that shelf is almost bare.

A few discs are still moving

Independent estimates from Alinea Analytics indicate that a small number of releases are still putting up a fight. EA Sports FC 26, Resident Evil Requiem and 007 First Light could rank among the year’s strongest physical launches. Each of those titles saw at least 12% of its estimated global sales come through physical copies.

Resident Evil Requiem topped that group. About 27.8% of its estimated 3.5 million sales were disc-based, which comes to nearly one million physical copies sold worldwide.

One important caveat: those Alinea figures are global, so they can’t be placed directly alongside Circana’s US-only numbers. Different maps, different scale.

The money tells the same story

If the unit totals don’t unsettle you, the dollars might. Yearly US consumer spending on physical games slid from roughly $11.5 billion in 2009 to $1.6 billion in 2026, according to data Piscatella shared.

That’s no mere dip. It’s a collapse stretched across close to a decade and a half — and it’s still falling.

Half the hardware can’t even read a disc

Part of the explanation is sitting in living rooms as we speak. The lower-priced PS5 Digital Edition and the Xbox Series S both arrive without a disc drive, and shoppers keep opting for them.

Piscatella reckons more than half of Xbox Series consoles in the US lack a disc drive entirely. For PlayStation 5, the figure is north of a quarter.

You can’t sell a disc to a console that has no place to load it.

What 2028 really means

Physical editions today account for a comparatively small portion of the console market, and the January 2028 cutoff drives a firm line beneath it. That’s when new PlayStation games on disc come to an end.

So if you’re the sort of player who wants a spine on the shelf, a case to lend to a friend, a game you own rather than license, your window is closing. Seven titles topped 100,000 copies this year. Next year that pool shrinks further. The year after that, the choice disappears.

Grab the discs while there are still discs to grab.
