AMD is committing as much as $5 billion to Anthropic. In turn, Anthropic will funnel a sizable share of that cash straight back to AMD to buy chips. Yes, it works like a loop — because it is one.
The chipmaker unveiled the arrangement on Wednesday, and its structure reveals far more than the top-line figure. Per the announcement and an earlier report from The Wall Street Journal, Anthropic plans to roll out up to 2 gigawatts of AMD’s Instinct MI450 GPUs, powered by AMD’s new Helios rack-scale system.

The money moves in a circle
This is the piece worth pausing on. AMD isn’t merely offloading hardware to Anthropic. It’s putting money into the very firm purchasing that hardware, and then turning around to buy that firm’s product.
Bundled into the deal is a “multi-year engineering collaboration,” and AMD will use Anthropic’s Claude throughout its own software development, engineering and product development. In other words, AMD supplies the chips, bankrolls the purchaser, and then becomes a customer of the purchaser’s model. Every arrow loops back to both parties.
“By partnering with AMD across the stack, we are securing the capacity we need and optimizing it for training and serving Claude,” said Tom Brown, Anthropic cofounder and chief compute officer, in the press release.
Anthropic is buying compute from everyone
None of this is an isolated move. Anthropic has by now inked AI infrastructure agreements with Google, Broadcom and Amazon. It has also struck data center deals with SpaceX and TeraWulf — and there’s chatter that a pact with Meta could follow.
Put simply, this is a company scooping up capacity from anyone prepared to offer it. What makes the AMD deal notable isn’t its size. It’s that AMD is simultaneously the one cutting the investment check.
When the chips actually show up
Don’t count on any of this going live anytime soon. The pair intends to bring the first gigawatt online in the first half of 2027, layering it atop the SpaceX and TeraWulf data center deals Anthropic already holds. No public timeline has been set for the second gigawatt.
Keep your eye on the calendar rather than the dollar amount. The benchmark AMD should be measured against is that opening gigawatt arriving in the first half of 2027. Beyond that, it’s all just a pledge with a press release attached.
