A prison window. An orange jumpsuit. Lucia gazing out at nothing in particular.
That shot isn’t new — it appeared in the very first GTA 6 trailer back in 2023. Then, on August 26, it resurfaced inside leaked footage, and the internet spent the rest of the day concluding that Rockstar had quietly made its own game look worse.
The footage came from Cyberleek, an individual or group that has been dropping daily GTA 6 leaks online since last week. Another one landed earlier today, and it broke the pattern of their previous drops: Wednesday’s video appears to show the game’s prologue, running through flashbacks of Lucia’s life before catching up with her behind bars.
We’re leaving the fresh details and revelations from today’s prologue leak alone. For this particular argument, only one sequence matters — the one we all first saw nearly three years ago.
The two versions of the same window
In the trailer, a heavier wash of orange sunlight cuts through the glass. It’s moodier and far more cinematic, the sort of lighting that earns a shot a spot in a thumbnail.
In the newly leaked version of that same moment, the lighting is far less dramatic. There’s no blazing orange sun pouring through the window.
Line the two up and, sure, on first glance it reads as a downgrade. Which is precisely how the day went.
The numbers on the pile-on
The comparisons spread fast, above all on Twitter, where engagement pays. A post from (Not) Centro Leaks has racked up more than 2.5 million views and 400+ replies. Another, by Lo-Ping, sits at 2.1 million views and 1,300 shares.
Lo-Ping’s entry reads “Oh YUCK” and places screenshots from the trailer and the leak beside one another. That’s it. Two images, two words.
Plenty of others stop short of stating it flatly and simply ask whether people reckon GTA 6’s visuals have been downgraded — which amounts to the same thing. The upshot is a huge number of people circulating these images and insisting GTA 6’s trailers lied, and that Rockstar has substantially nerfed the game’s visuals ahead of its November launch.
So has it been downgraded
Nobody can answer that for you. Not us, and not a single person on Twitter claiming to have the truth.
Begin with the glaring gap: we have no idea how Cyberleek obtained the leaked footage in the first place. Whatever build these leaks originate from may not have every lighting effect switched on, or may be running settings that differ from the finished game.
Then there’s the capture itself. The build’s HDR settings are unknown to us, as is the method used to record any of it. Observers have noted that several earlier Cyberleek clips had the look of HDR footage that was encoded badly before being uploaded.
Nor do we know whether this latest leak originates from the same build as the earlier ones or from a different, older version of the game.
The boring explanation nobody wants
There’s one more possibility, and it makes for a terrible screenshot. Rockstar might simply have judged that the blown-out sun and cinematic styling of the trailer were wrong for the scene, opting instead for a flatter, more realistic look.
That’s speculation. So is everything else being shouted about today.
Rockstar Games and Take-Two have confirmed none of this. What we have is leaked footage of unknown origin, taken from a build of unknown vintage, set against a marketing trailer. Those are three distinct categories of thing, and the comparison flattens them into one.
What the rest of the leaks have looked like
Worth keeping in mind: a great deal of the leaked footage has looked impressive, lining up with the trailers and screenshots Rockstar Games has released officially.
A single window doesn’t undo all of that. But a single window is what fits inside a tweet.
So before the panic sets in or the misinformation spreads further, take a breath and chill. The distance between “this frame looks different” and “Rockstar lied to you” is vast, and the people leaping across it right now know no more than you do.
Tomorrow might settle it
Netflix’s GTA 6 extended look event takes place tomorrow. This very scene could well show up there.
Should that happen, the compelling question won’t be whether it looks pretty. It’ll be which of the two versions it resembles.
