A hand comes down on a button on a beat-up retro console. The shot rises to a television displaying the words ‘Ashpool-1’, followed by cyberpunk’s best-known opening sentence: “The sky above the port was the color of television, tuned to a dead channel.”
Two weeks ago, that 25-second fragment arrived. Apple TV has now released everything that follows it.
The date, and how the episodes actually roll out
At the Apple TV panel held in Hall H at San Diego Comic-Con 2026, the studio locked in Friday, January 22, 2027 as the Neuromancer premiere. The opening day brings two episodes, with a single instalment following every Friday until March 19, 2027 — ten episodes in all.
The first three were directed by JD Dillard, who also serves as executive producer next to showrunner Graham Roland, Jennifer Haley and William Gibson himself. That last name is more than a courtesy credit here, since no screen adaptation of the novel has ever existed before.
Why 42 years later is the point
Roland laid out his reasoning at the panel plainly.
“42 years ago, this book felt like true science fiction,” Roland said. “Gibson famously coined the term ‘cyberspace’ to describe a digital space where people in the book go to to escape and interact [with each other], and he did all that before the internet existed.”
There was more. “He wrote about the collision of artificial intelligence and human intelligence before artificial intelligence existed. Now, we’re living in a world 40 years later where these things are a part of our everyday lives. It’s an appropriate time to revisit the text, to put it in a new light now that these things are here.”
Callum Turner is carrying the whole thing
Case, the console cowboy who anchors the novel, is played by Turner — and Roland did not soften how much rests on that single performance.
“Everyone came with a deep love of the source material,” he said. “He read the book, dove into his character. Case is an atypical protagonist. He’s a criminal, rough around the edges, he’s a survivor. In the book, there’s no mention of his family, he’s kind of an orphan, doing out of an instinct of survival, desperation. Callum threads that needle. He’s able to play the dangerous part of Case, inhabit the humanity and charisma. One of the things that’s very important is that this is Case’s story, you’re following him. The charisma needs to carry you for 10 episodes.”
Betting ten episodes on charisma is no small wager. Case isn’t the sort of hero you cheer for — he’s one you trail because he never stops moving.
The teaser, and a glitch that wasn’t a glitch
Turner didn’t attend in person. He submitted a video message that appeared to break up before morphing into the teaser itself. A neat gimmick, and it landed.
“We’re building something special with Neuromancer,” Turner said. “[Gibson] didn’t just give us cyberspace, he helped us define the entire cyperpunk genre. This is just your first access point.”
YouTube has the trailer up already, and the image destined for endless screenshots is Briana Middleton’s Molly: mirror eyes and the retractable fingernails that earn her the razorgirl label. Mark Strong appears as Armitage. The whole thing plays dark, gritty and intense, with no sign of being smoothed over for mainstream comfort.
