After two decades of dormancy, Capcom pushed a million copies of Onimusha: Way of the Sword out the door before day one had even finished.
That figure is worldwide and covers the opening day alone — for a franchise that hadn’t received a genuine new installment since the early 2000s. The publisher shared the milestone on Monday, September 7.
What the milestone unlocked
There was a knock-on effect for Capcom’s ledger, too. Powered by the new release’s showing, Onimusha has now crossed 10 million lifetime sales as a series, counting all the way back to its 2001 debut.
Way of the Sword launched on September 4, 2026, across PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2 and PC.
Nostalgia wasn’t the whole plan
Capcom points to an extended marketing lead-up as a key factor. Several demos were released in the months before launch, and the company put the game in players’ hands at a range of events.
Two audiences were in the crosshairs: veterans of the original titles who needed reminding the franchise still had a pulse, and newcomers with zero history with Onimusha. The day-one tally suggests neither group was missed.
Musashi walks Edo-period Kyoto
For anyone catching up, the premise is uncomplicated. Way of the Sword unfolds in Edo-period Kyoto, with Miyamoto Musashi in the lead role.
The fighting leans on quick swordplay paired with the supernatural Oni abilities that have underpinned the series from the start. There’s no reinvention at work here — just the formula fans had been missing, rebuilt on modern hardware.
The line buried in the press release
The headline sales number isn’t actually the most telling detail. The sentence sitting next to it is.
Capcom stated that, in parallel with its big annual releases, it intends to continue resurrecting legacy IPs that have gone untouched for years, mining its library of classic franchises to do it.
The publisher is sitting on plenty of dormant properties. And it has just seen one of them clear a million sales inside 24 hours.
