The GTA 6 code you paid for might refuse to work on your own machine. No glitch, no downed server — just the country your PlayStation account is registered to.
On PS5, Grand Theft Auto 6 download codes are region-locked. On Xbox, they aren’t.
That single distinction sounds minor — right up until you remember there’s no alternative route into this game.
No disc means no escape hatch
Grand Theft Auto 6 isn’t going to be available on a physical disc. What about those physical editions? A code inside a box. Nothing more.
Which means anyone playing on PS5 ends up with a digital copy, wanted or not — and therefore anyone playing on PS5 falls under the region lock.
A region-locked game simply won’t redeem when your account’s country doesn’t line up with the code’s region. Pick up the wrong box and what you’re holding is cardboard.
None of that applies on Xbox. Codes on that platform redeem on any account, no matter the region.
The 8-to-1 number everyone ran with
Fans wasted no time once pre-orders opened. IGN said its PS5 affiliate link beat Xbox’s by 8-to-1, and the internet immediately read that as a final score.
Xbox disputed it. In the company’s telling, the figure had nothing to do with sales — it was web traffic data, not a financial report. Xbox says its own GTA 6 pre-orders have hit record numbers.
Meanwhile, a limitation has landed on the rival platform that Xbox never had to dream up itself.
Know your region before you buy the box
The people this hits hardest are PlayStation owners who’d rather grab the physical edition than order through the console’s official store.
Here’s how the regions are split: Brazil, LATAM, North America, Korea, Japan, United Kingdom, Saudi Arabia and UAE, Rest of Asia, and Rest of EMEA and Asia. Work out where your country sits before any money changes hands, otherwise the activation screen will break the news for you.
People still want the box, and that’s the point
Even with nothing but a code inside, a lot of fans still collect game boxes and line them up on a shelf. The format changed; the habit didn’t.
That’s among the many reasons players are resisting Sony’s push to do away with game discs entirely.
A box holding a region-locked code is an odd artifact. Ownership is what it resembles. A receipt is what it acts like.
Retail is feeling it already
Hardly anything makes the physical versions of Grand Theft Auto 6 worth buying, and that has left retail stores in an awkward position. Pre-orders have dropped noticeably.
Accounts from GameSpot employees about GTA 6 pre-order sales point to a pattern that’s tough to overlook. Customers have little appetite for a box containing a region-locked code.
Heading home and pre-ordering digitally is the preferred option.
Because it’s a timed console exclusive, anyone playing on day one has to pick between Xbox Series X/S and PlayStation 5. The majority have long since made up their minds. For those still weighing it up, the deciding factor won’t be visuals, controllers, or where their friends happen to play.
It’ll be whether a line of characters printed inside a box accepts the country attached to your account.
