A pickup falls apart. Officers turn up at the apartment block, Jason and Lucia exchange gunfire with them, and then it’s a run for it. That’s one of the scenes in the new extended gameplay preview for Grand Theft Auto VI, and it’s the sharpest indication so far of how Rockstar Games intends its next open-world crime title to play.
The footage premiered on Netflix. It goes deep on protagonists Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos, the criminal work they do, the character-switching mechanic, and a stack of activities players will get to try when GTA 6 arrives on November 19.
Everything on show revolves around Jason and Lucia, and players can swap between the pair. Jason is described as an ex-military drug runner. Lucia is a fighter recently out of prison, and it’s their relationship plus their criminal activities that anchor the game’s Bonnie and Clyde-inspired story.
The two scenes that reward a second viewing
What the extended look shows appears to be one continuous sequence with Jason and Lucia at an apartment building. The pickup is meant to be routine, but the arrival of police derails it, and the two are pushed into a shootout before making their getaway.
In the second scene, the protagonists are working security for a rich client at a party. It unravels quickly. Armed kidnappers move in, and another firefight breaks out.
Together they give a better sense of just how cinematic Rockstar is willing to make missions this time around.
The small icon nobody has accounted for
There’s also a hint at a morality or honor system in the preview. A small icon shows up mid-gameplay, which suggests the game may be keeping track of how Jason and Lucia behave.
The hedging here is deliberate, and warranted. Rockstar hasn’t spelled out how the system would shape the characters or the game around them. At this stage it’s all inferred from the footage rather than confirmed by the studio.
Racing, diving and one very long drop
Several racing activities get screen time in the extended footage: dirt-bike races, drag racing, and events on purpose-built tracks.
Scuba diving and base jumping are options as well. In one moment, Lucia parachutes off a skyscraper above Vice City.
Then there’s the mundane material, which is the best material
Ordinary, day-to-day activities are woven in too. Jason is seen eating. Lucia works out with weights.
Drinking, opening refrigerators and smoking cigars also appear. Minor details, sure. But minor details are usually where Rockstar games do their living.
What it all amounts to
Switching characters, robberies, racing, exploring, richer interactions. Taken as a whole, GTA 6 looks like it’s expanding on Rockstar’s earlier open-world systems while layering in a handful of new gameplay elements.
As this spreads further, it’s worth keeping the sourcing clear. Rockstar is the source for both the November 19 release date and the two protagonists. The morality icon is something viewers noticed in the footage, and it remains unconfirmed unless the studio addresses it.
For now, the shot that lingers is Lucia walking off the edge of a Vice City skyscraper with a parachute strapped to her back.
