About two and a half years ago, Microsoft wanted buyers to trust a single label above any spec sheet. The “Copilot Plus PC” name was meant to signal which laptops carried enough on-board AI power to handle real work. Microsoft and Qualcomm now appear to be conceding that the brand has already run its course.
Microsoft’s own devices show this most plainly. Both the new 12-inch Surface Pro and the 13-inch Surface Laptop technically satisfy the system requirements for a Copilot Plus PC, yet Microsoft no longer calls them that.
Microsoft’s Surface chief confirms the shift
Speaking to Windows Central’s Zac Bowden, Microsoft Surface CVP Brett Ostrom put it plainly: “These are not called Copilot Plus PCs.”
Qualcomm is not resisting the move. Kedar Kondap, the company’s SVP of compute and gaming, told Bowden that machines delivering the same experiences will “probably” drop the branding going forward. It is a cautious answer, but it is no defense of the name.
A badge built to expire
Anyone who tracked the launch should not be shocked. As far back as 2024, critics noted that nearly every PC would soon ship with the baseline AI hardware the label was designed to highlight. Once a badge applies to almost everything, it stops meaning anything.
The software did not do the brand any favors. Recall, the headline feature for Copilot Plus PCs, got a poor reception. Microsoft also drew heavy criticism for pestering Windows users with AI upsells and for adding a dedicated Copilot key to keyboards. That key can finally be remapped now, which tells you a great deal about how much demand there was for it to begin with.
Nvidia silicon is the next sales pitch
The old name looks dated for another reason too. Microsoft’s flagship hardware is set to switch to Nvidia chips, a change billed as the start of a new era of personal AI in Windows.
On October 7th, Microsoft will host a “conversation on how local AI will shape the next chapter of the PC.” Expect it to come with a fresh brand to take the place of “Copilot Plus PC.” If you plan to buy a laptop before that, skip the sticker and study the spec sheet instead. That is the one label Microsoft cannot rebrand.
