Netflix has a habit of assembling rockets it never bothers to launch. Rebel Ridge landed in 2024, and two years on the praised action thriller has produced no sequel, no spinoff and no universe. It is also still the finest original action movie the service has ever put out.
Therein lies the irritation. Aaron Pierre became a star the moment the film dropped, and the machinery around him did precisely nothing with that.
The sequel graveyard is getting crowded
Scan the service’s slate of original films and the lack of franchises is genuinely peculiar. Extraction is the dependable exception, with two more movies and a TV spinoff on the way. Past that, the films built to launch franchises keep grinding to a halt.
Back in 2021, Red Notice was among the biggest titles the service had ever put out. Multiple follow-ups were planned, and none of them have arrived. The Gray Man, from the Russo Bros, was meant to kick off a cinematic universe; its sequel never materialised. Rebel Ridge is parked in exactly the same holding pattern.
Strange, given it has the most obvious case for a return of any of them.
First Blood, if the paperwork came first
Pierre stars as Terry, an ex-Marine who collides with a crooked police force in a small town. If you’ve seen First Blood, or sat through a season of Reacher, the shape is instantly recognisable: one man, one town, and one very bad decision made by the locals.
Describing it as a straightforward actioner sells the film short. Where John Wick constructs its narrative around the setpieces, Rebel Ridge holds them back. Terry works through his few remaining options to recover the money the police confiscated from him, and the movie lives inside that pressure until nothing is left but fighting skills that border on the supernatural.
That delay is the whole design. By the time the violence finally erupts, it lands as catharsis — which it never would have if it had shown up 10 minutes in.
Trust me on this one
For years now Netflix has been hunting for an action franchise of its own. It already produced one, then simply let it sit. Two years later, Rebel Ridge remains the film to queue up when you feel like watching a man patiently exhaust every option he has left.
