Nintendo has announced Young Link and Young Zelda amiibo, due out in 2027. Scanning either one unlocks a special in-game mask modeled on that character.

Don’t count on the masks to shake up gameplay. They probably won’t do anything meaningful in-game, so they’re best treated as a cosmetic costume.

A nod to the 1998 originals

Longtime fans should be happy with this part. Nintendo based both figures on how the characters looked in the 1998 release, and those designs shaped much of how Link and Zelda would appear in later games.

The Young Link figure shows the hero as a child, with his fairy companion Navi beside him. Young Zelda holds the ocarina, the instrument that takes on a central role as the story progresses.

Preorders for both figures are open now. Demand has been high and stock keeps coming and going, so don’t wait too long if you want a pair.

Plenty still under wraps

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time is still considered one of the greatest games ever made, and it’s returning as a remake for Nintendo Switch 2. A full reveal showed off a lot more of the game, but many questions won’t be answered until launch day.

The biggest one is whether there’s anything new. Fans usually expect a “remake” to include at least some fresh material, but nobody knows yet whether the developer has added any. Until that’s settled, these amiibo are the only confirmed bonus content, and they’d look good on a growing collection shelf too.

This pair probably won’t be the last. Nintendo has made a habit of tying amiibo into its other Zelda releases whenever it can, so these two likely make up the game’s first wave.

A busy stretch for Zelda

The remake isn’t the only thing coming for fans. The movie is still on track for next year and is planned as a standalone story that shouldn’t have much effect on the wider series of games.

Nintendo should also lay out its plans for the series at some point, though it will likely wait for the Ocarina excitement to die down first.

For now, the clearest preview of what’s coming is a small plastic kid in green with his fairy at his side.
