Portal opens Shop, letting Shards buy game top-ups and gift cards

portal opens shop letting shards buy game top ups and gift cards In Brief:

In Brief:

  • Portal has opened Portal Shop at shop.portalgaming.com, a storefront where Shards can be spent on game top-ups and gift cards.
  • Filters for category, product, platform and region sit across a catalog of 97 products, with markets covered including the U.S., U.K., Europe, Japan, South Korea, Brazil and Southeast Asia.
  • This is the first place consumers can actually spend Shards, the reward currency Portal has been handing out via game jams and creator programs since its April pivot toward AI game-development tools.

Portal has rolled out Portal Shop, a storefront built to turn Shards into game top-ups and gift cards.

“Spend your Shards to unlock game top-ups and gift cards for the games you play every day to inspire your creations,” the company said in its announcement. The shop is live at shop.portalgaming.com.

As it stands, 97 products are listed, sortable by category, product, platform and region. The regional spread takes in the U.S., U.K., Europe, Japan, South Korea, Brazil, Turkey, Southeast Asia and the Middle East, plus global SKUs. Purchases arrive as instant codes or as top-ups applied straight to an account.

Shards or card

Checkout accepts either Shards or a payment card. Better value comes from paying in Shards, according to Portal, although no conversion rate has been published. Signing in is required to pay with Shards, and anyone who registers an account is given free Shards to start with.

The supply of Shards flows from Portal’s own events. A 50,000 Shards prize pool is attached to Portal Game Jam Aug, which runs Aug. 15-17. An identical pool is on offer at the September jam, set for Sept. 19-21. Running through Aug. 1-31 is the Portal Gen8 Creators Program. Before those came Portal Nexus: Asset Sprint, held July 6-20, and Portal Studio: Agent Chats from June 1-15.

Portal presents the Shop next to Studio, Nexus and Gen8, all behind a single login.

The pivot

Today’s Portal is not the same company behind the 2024 PORTAL token launch. Portal 2.0 was announced on April 18, with the relaunch framed as “Day 1” and the firm’s earlier identity as an interoperability and liquidity layer for web3 gaming dropped in favor of AI-native creation tools.

Ahead of that relaunch came a merger with BLIFE Protocol, announced Dec. 22, 2025. Fresh capital and portfolio connections for the combined business were pledged by Animoca Brands. The CEO role went to Benjamin Charbit at the close of the merger; he was previously a director at Ubisoft on Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag.

The unveiling put names to four products: Studio, GameRouter, GameGen for prompt-generated games and GameHub for monetization.

Late July brought GameRouter to market, rebranded as Nexus and hosted at nexus.portalgaming.com. Prompts are routed to specialized models for code, sprites and audio, all behind one API key and a single credit balance spanning 2D, 3D, voice, music and NPC tooling. Portal called it “a unified API that powers your agents, assets, and pipelines across your entire game-dev stack.” Existing tools including Claude Code, Cursor, Unity, Unreal and Godot can be plugged in by developers.

Third on the roadmap is Gen8, an integrated engine that Portal describes as close to shipping. Early access went out to 20 hand-picked creators, who will build alongside the team and help shape its dev tools. GameHub has yet to appear.

What carried over from the pivot was the Nexus name, not the product it once described. On an earlier Portal roadmap, the label belonged to a cross-chain gaming experience designed around asset-to-asset transactions.

Where the token sits

Revenue generated by the AI tools has been earmarked for recurring PORTAL buybacks. Early access, advanced tool usage rights and voting rights all go to holders.

Between Feb. 22 and Feb. 28, 2024, 50 million PORTAL tokens were distributed through Binance Launchpool. Of a 1 billion total supply, roughly 592.5 million is in circulation. Its all-time high of $3.36 was set on Feb. 29, 2024.

A number of details remain unaddressed. No pricing or access tiers for the AI tools have been published, the token’s function within the creator workflow hasn’t been spelled out, and the model providers behind the routing layer go unnamed. Legacy staking is another loose end. The team said in mid-June that a solution was being finalized and that an unstaking guide would follow.

For the moment, Shards are the only currency the Shop promotes a discount for. Nothing there can be bought with the token that gave Portal its name.
