Sky Mavis, the company behind the largest gaming blockchain by active users, Ronin, has revealed plans to introduce support for zkEVM L2 chains. This move will enable third-party game developers to construct their L2 blockchains on the Ronin platform using a modified Polygon Chain Development Kit (CDK) version.
Despite having a relatively small number of games compared to other networks, Ronin boasts an impressive daily user base exceeding 1 million. Sky Mavis aims to attract a wider range of game developers and users to its platform by collaborating with Polygon and establishing a dedicated ZK blockchain.
The decision to incorporate zkEVM L2 chains comes as a response to the rapid growth experienced by Ronin. Sky Mavis recognizes the need to stay ahead in terms of scalability, particularly as certain games may require a majority of game actions to be conducted on-chain. By implementing this new feature, Ronin hopes to cater to a broader spectrum of game developers and their specific requirements.
In addition to supporting third-party developers, Ronin also intends to integrate a Polygon ZK prover directly into its platform. This will enable developers to create their own zkEVMs without the need to establish their own security and consensus mechanisms. However, developers looking to launch their L2s on Ronin will be required to meet a 250K RON validator requirement before initiating their chain.
While an exact launch date for the first zkEVM chain on Ronin has not been specified, Sky Mavis CEO and co-founder Trung Nguyen anticipates a potential launch in Q1 2025. Nguyen emphasizes the company’s vision of building a unified gaming ecosystem that facilitates seamless asset transfers, token swaps, and NFT trading between Layer 1 (L1) and L2 games, all while offering low gas fees for users.
