The manhwa poised to take a swing at the isekai genre isn’t Omniscient Reader. It isn’t even an action title. It’s a villainess series, and its anime has just been confirmed — already in production.
Villains Are Destined to Die revealed the adaptation on August 8, a month on from the conclusion of its main story. The announcement arrived bundled with the final main story chapter on Piccoma, framed as a message straight from the creators.
This isn’t a tentative plan. It isn’t a development deal. It’s greenlit and underway.
The subgenre that keeps almost breaking through
Villainess and otome isekai anime have had a decent run over the past couple of years. From Bureaucrat to Villainess, May I Ask For One Final Thing, and Doga Kobo’s Though I Am An Inept Villainess all made it to screen. All of them solid shows.
Even so, measured against mainstream isekai and fantasy, the villainess and otome isekai genres — largely interchangeable labels by now — still haven’t left their mark in animated form. Not conclusively. Not in the way readers of the genre are certain it could.
Villains Are Destined to Die stands as the biggest villainess manhwa of recent years, and it may be the title that hauls the entire subgenre into the spotlight single-handedly.
What the creators actually said
Here is the message from the series’ writer, who penned the original web novel:
“Hello, this is Gwon Gyeoeul, author of the novel Villains Are Destined to Die. Thanks to the tremendous support from our readers, the anime adaptation of this work has finally been decided. I am very happy that we will be able to deliver the characters moving vividly on screen! And congratulations on the long-awaited completion of the manga! SUOL, the webtoon’s illustrator, added:
“Thanks to the warm support we have received from our readers, the TV anime adaptation of Villains Are Destined to Die has been decided! In addition to the completion of the work, I am thrilled to be able to deliver this wonderful news. I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to everyone who is breathing new life into the work. Please look forward to and support the Villains Are Destined to Die anime which is currently in production!”
Since the reveal coincided with the Japanese release of the closing chapter, the adaptation is probably a Japanese production rather than a Korean aeni. No studio has been named so far.
The track record is not encouraging
Anime versions of Japanese villainess manga turn up every year. Adaptations of Korean manhwa remain uncommon, and the handful that got made haven’t found their footing. Why Raeliana Ended Up at the Duke’s Mansion. Who Made Me A Princess. Doctor Elise. Three attempts, three misses — at least when it comes to living up to the source material or drawing a mainstream crowd.
The precedent, in other words, urges caution.
Yet no other otome isekai manhwa has shown up with momentum on this scale. Villains Are Destined to Die wrapped a six-year run holding a perfect rating, split an award with Solo Leveling: Ragnarok, and accumulated 138 million cumulative views across KakaoPage, Tapas and Tappytoon.
Why this one has a shot
The threshold is straightforward. Should the anime manage to honour the gorgeous visuals of the series, there’s no reason for it to fall short. It could end the losing streak and finally put otome isekai on the map.
Timing works in its favour too. Isekai anime has felt stuck for some time, running the same engine into the ground. A title like Villains Are Destined to Die might be exactly the change of air the genre is waiting for.
Six years, a perfect rating and 138 million views walk into an animation studio nobody has named yet.
