Star Trek has spent 60 years seeking out strange new worlds. Starting October 20, the job is to stay put on one of them and keep everything running.
That is the core idea behind Star Trek: Outposts Unknown, a narrative-driven strategy game made by developer Magic Fuel Games. According to the studio, it is the first outpost builder ever set in the Star Trek universe. The franchise’s usual sci-fi action gives way to construction and colony management. Discovering a planet is only the opening move. The real game is establishing a permanent presence there.
The concept cleverly reverses one of the series’ oldest ideas. Boldly going somewhere new is just the beginning. What follows is figuring out how to build on that world and how to survive there.
Less bridge, more blueprints
You won’t be commanding a starship and hopping from one mission to the next. Outposts Unknown has you constructing complex research facilities, unlocking technology and building trees, and deciding which structures are needed to keep the whole operation going.
You also have to handle logistics and resources. Individual crew members can be assigned different jobs, and your officers can be developed as conditions become more dangerous. Crew morale and survival are another layer to manage, which makes clear this is not a cozy builder where nothing ever goes wrong.
Despite the new genre, the game still sounds unmistakably like Star Trek. Its original story takes place in the 23rd century, the same period as Strange New Worlds, and sends players to the X’Lehari System to aid a civilization on the brink of catastrophe. The larger conflict centers on a mysterious cosmic force that threatens the wider system. (Yes, a mysterious cosmic force. Some traditions are sacred.)
Genre-hopping is nothing new for the franchise
For most of its history, Star Trek has borrowed from other genres. Across its 60 years you can find horror, political drama, courtroom thrillers, comedy, war stories and even the occasional Western.
Standalone episodes have often placed well-known crews in completely different tones. Later series moved toward darker, serialized storytelling that would have seemed out of place in The Original Series era. Strange New Worlds even used puppetry in a recent, controversial episode. Next to that, a colony sim seems fairly mild.
Out of every detour the franchise might take, this one may suit it best. Exploring unknown worlds is the entire premise. A game that asks what happens after the away team stops beaming back up feels like the natural next step.
Key details ahead of release
Star Trek: Outposts Unknown arrives on October 20, 2026. Magic Fuel Games is handling development, with Playstack as publisher. At the moment, the only confirmed platform is PC via Steam. No versions for PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch or any other console have been announced.

Windows system requirements appear on the Steam page, calling for at least 16 GB of RAM and roughly 10 GB of free storage. The game is single-player and will support Steam Achievements, Steam Cloud and Family Sharing.
One strange detail stands out. With two weeks to go, the price is still unknown. As of October 5, the Steam page lists no purchase price and offers no preorder. The only option is to wishlist the game and receive a notification when it launches on October 20.
Anyone who has already played it got an early look. Following the game’s June announcement, a playable demo appeared on Steam featuring around three hours of narrative gameplay and a preview of the resource-management systems. That demo no longer appears to be available. The Steam listing now shows just one button, and it reads wishlist.
