President Donald Trump has released a new set of digital trading cards on the Bitcoin blockchain, signaling a deeper dive into the cryptocurrency world.
The Trump Bitcoin Digital Trading Cards collection utilizes Bitcoin Ordinals to create a unique digital asset tied to individual satoshis, the smallest unit of Bitcoin.
This latest venture only offers the new collection to existing holders of at least 100 NFTs from his previous “Mugshot Edition.” The initiative began on January 9, with the opportunity to claim cards extending until January 31. The launch has introduced 160 cards, with plans to expand to 200.
A notable aspect of this collection includes a physical card paired with 47 digital cards featuring a piece of the suit worn by Trump at the time of his recent arrest in Georgia.
Currently, 21 of these digital trading cards are up for sale on the NFT marketplace Magic Eden, with prices starting at 0.177 BTC, approximately $17,000. This marks Trump’s initial foray into using Ordinals, indicating a strategic pivot towards embracing cryptocurrency technologies.
Trump’s Shift Towards Cryptocurrency
Trump’s engagement with digital assets has evolved significantly since his initial skepticism. In 2019, he dismissed Bitcoin as “based on thin air.” However, his stance has dramatically changed over the years, culminating in his current promotion of Bitcoin and cryptocurrencies. His earlier digital trading card NFTs have been a commercial success, generating $24.3 million from 56,000 sales.
Furthermore, Trump has positioned himself as a pro-crypto advocate, especially highlighted during his campaign and his promises made at the Bitcoin2024 conference. His commitment to making the U.S. the “crypto capital of the world” was further underscored by the launch of his DeFi project, World Liberty Financial, and his supportive stance on stablecoins.
This recent initiative not only enhances his profile in the digital world but also strengthens his ties with the crypto community, which has shown substantial support through campaign donations and active participation in crypto markets.
