Ubisoft has officially announced that Champions Tactics: Reforged will launch on Steam as a free-to-play game starting Monday, May 19.
The Steam version removes blockchain elements and NFTs, targeting a broader PC gaming audience that prefers classic gameplay without web3 integrations.
Strategic Gameplay, No Blockchain
While the original title, Grimoria Chronicles, was designed with Web3 components like NFTs and blockchain-based ownership, the Steam version shifts focus. Champions Tactics: Reforged keeps the core mechanics—strategic, turn-based 3v3 battles with unique champions—but removes all digital asset features. Players will instead collect and unlock characters through in-game progression and optional purchases, emphasizing tactical skill over asset speculation.
Ubisoft describes the experience as “tactical play to win,” indicating that outcomes are driven by strategy rather than in-game spending. Though monetization through in-app purchases is included, details on pricing and progression have yet to be fully revealed. This leaves open questions about how fair or balanced the competitive environment will be.
Steam Release and Player Requirements
To play the game via Steam, users will need to link their Ubisoft Connect account. While this extra step may deter some, it allows Ubisoft to streamline account access across platforms. The game also includes standard Steam features like achievements, trading cards, and anti-cheat protection through Easy Anti-Cheat, reinforcing its appeal for competitive players.
Season 4 Begins
The Steam launch also marks the start of Season 4 in Champions Tactics. Season 3 ends with a small patch designed to improve gameplay, though Ubisoft has not yet shared full details about the new season’s content. More information is expected after the game goes live, with updates likely shared through Ubisoft’s official channels and Discord.
The original blockchain-based version launched in October 2024 through Ubisoft’s own platform and the Oasys network. Since then, the company has experimented with web3 integrations, including NFT avatars in The Sandbox. But the Steam release of Reforged signals a clear intent to also serve the traditional gaming community.
