Here’s the offer Microsoft is quietly floating to its most dedicated players this week: watch a few ads, then stream a game — one you’ve already paid for.

Microsoft revealed on Thursday that certain Xbox players will be able to stream certain titles once they’ve sat through some advertising. The model is lifted directly from the ad-supported tiers already familiar from Netflix, HBO Max and Prime Video. View the spots, and you get in.

By design, the trial is limited. Only members of the Xbox Insiders program can take part, and it applies solely to games those players already own. Sessions are capped at one hour across supported devices.

Xbox is presenting the move as a perk rather than a trade-off.

“The core game experience is unchanged,” the Xbox team wrote in a post on Xbox Wire, adding that “This is optional. Players can choose other ways to play at any time.”

One phrase keeps coming up from the company. It describes the trial as being run “with the player in mind.”

“Advertising has existed in gaming for decades, from in-game placements to free-to-play models,” Microsoft said in its announcement. “But it hasn’t always been built with the player in mind. When done well, advertising can help lower the cost of access. It creates another way for players to get into games without an upfront streaming purchase and expands audiences through new ways to play.”

According to the team, the ads “do not interrupt the flow of gameplay.” And it vows to “hold ads to the same quality bar as our content.”

“We’ll learn from this test and continue to improve it based on how players use it and what they tell us,” the Xbox team said. “Our goal is simple. Give more people more affordable ways to play.”

Affordability is the word Microsoft keeps reaching for

That word carries weight at the moment, since the hardware itself is becoming a lot pricier.

Having already lifted Xbox Series X and S console prices in 2025, Microsoft has another significant hike arriving on Aug. 1. The standard Xbox Series X will soon go for $799.99. The entry-level model, an Xbox Series S packing 512 GB of storage, will soon run $499.99.

To cushion the impact, Microsoft has been promoting financing and Buy Now, Pay Later options. It has even suggested that pre-owned consoles are the cheapest route into the Xbox ecosystem. Pick up someone else’s old machine. That’s the value pitch.

The cuts behind the pitch

The advertising experiment isn’t unfolding in isolation. Microsoft is carrying out deep reductions throughout its Xbox division.

Over the course of the year the company announced 3,200 layoffs within the games group, and it’s parting with at least four game studios amid steep cost-cutting.

So the message comes across a bit oddly. Prices climbing. Studios shut. Thousands of jobs eliminated. And the affordable option Microsoft is putting forward is a Series S, ads ahead of your own games, or someone else’s used console.

Microsoft, on its side, maintains that the Xbox Series S is still among the most affordable ways to enjoy major franchises.
